- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
New dance clients start with a complimentary 15-minute consultation to establish clear goals and make sure we are a good fit. Most new clients then start with a 6 to 12-session beginner's program to get a strong foundation in basic movements and concepts and set up success in any future partner dance styles. Wedding dance clients generally have the goal of a first dance in mind. We start with a complimentary consultation to establish a clear picture of the feel of their wedding and how the dance could fit in and enhance that vision. Most wedding couples start with a 6 or 12-session program where we start by learning how to move together and partner and through the course of the program cover everything from steps for the dance, to entrance and exit. In-house music editing is also included in each program. Music students start with a complimentary consultation where we assess their current level and goals. Many of my students come to me with some prior experience, so my goal is to fill in the gaps of essential knowledge and skills within the first 5 sessions, then building on that foundation in the direction of their choosing.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude from the Ohio State University in 2005. During that time, I played in the OSU Orchestra and Symphonic Band, Jazz Combos, and played in the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra. I also sang in the Symphonic Chorus, Gospel Choir, and took private lessons in Jazz and Classical Bass styles. After my first year of music school, I took a year off to tour with acoustic musicians, "Coincidence Maybe." My first Ballroom teaching Certificate came in 2003 at a Fred Astaire Dance Studio (FADS) in Columbus. I went on to receive Certification through Silver Level with honors from FADS. In 2010, I went independent to direct a ballroom program at the current ITM studio with my wife and then dance partner, Rachel Nace Maynard. Since then, I have received a Master of Dance Degree from Dance Vision (DVIDA). I have been fortunate to have studied with many of the best coaches in the ballroom industry, including Ray Rivers, David Hamilton, Olga Foraponova, Maria Hansen, Marianne Nicole, Charlie Penatello, Jonathan Roberts, Tony Meredith, and many others. I have also studied jazz and contemporary under Broadway dancer, Alfred Dove, Ballet and Pilates under Rachel Nace Maynard.
