What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

How do I find a good drywall contractor?

The best way to find a good drywall contractor is by searching for the top-rated contractors near you on Thumbtack. View their ratings, and read their reviews to see how they did on past drywall projects. Pay attention to the photos uploaded by the customers and contractors, so you can analyze their quality of work.

Mr. Dix, sent his drywall specialist, Sam Lovins, to perform this job. Sam not only did what we contracted todo, but went beyond the call of duty, and secured a wall, he repaired, to the floor, where it had been knocked loose by a truck bumper. I highly recommend Sam Lovins, for drywall repair, and of course Mr. Dix company, for employing such professionals as Sam Lovins. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of repairs this company provided...

We needed ceiling repair due to a water leak above. We were given a fair estimate and scheduled in a very timely fashion. They came out when they said they would be there and maintained good communication. The quality of work was very good! I would definitely hire them again for any drywall work that needed to be done.

Textured ceiling repair and painting. William mixed up his client addresses and arrived at the wrong time for the estimate, but seemed knowledgeable regarding the scope of the repair and gave me a fair estimate for the work involved. On the scheduled work day, he arrived two hours late and his assistants came later in the day so they didn't finish until 8:00 pm. They were not very careful with painting technique - multiple spatters on my cooktop and counters, didn’t achieve a very crisp line against the wall and trim (relying on taping things off rather than angling the brush for the cut in). I pointed some of these problems out to William and he fixed them before leaving. Although they seemed to make a good effort at clean-up, there were some areas missed and they left a filmy residue on my stainless steel exhaust fan that was difficult to remove. I thought William had done an adequate job with the drywall repair although the texture didn’t exactly match the original. When I saw it the next day in full light, the repaired area was noticeably darker than the surrounding ceiling. I contacted William and he agreed to come back to see what could be done. We exchanged a few messages about availability for scheduling but he’s never returned and I’ve heard nothing for several days. I would not hire them again.

This pro is very unprofessional. Honestly, running a business the way they do, I'm amazed they have any customers. I hired them for a project consisting of 2 things. 1) drywall repair and finishing and 2) a stone patio. I only had 1 request and that was that the downstairs 1/2 bath get done in time for painting and flooring to get done before the weekend of 3/2/18. I was initially told they could start on 2/22, then actually booked for 2/26 at 9:00 am. I was then told that they were running behind and would be a couple of hours late. While trying to get them to at least commit to a schedule so I could arrange my work days, I was informed they weren't going to be doing my job after all. because all the rain had put them behind. So my question is, why would you be behind unless you just did nothing when it was too wet to work outside? I had plenty of inside work to get be done. I called Andy, got his voicemail, then I called Julie and spoke to her. This was useless, as I was promised a call back, but instead just got another Thumbtack message that they wouldn't be doing my work, then they wouldn't even answer my call back to them. They completely screwed me of any chance getting my work done on time, because I had already passed on several other contractors, having to start the estimate process all over again. Thanks a lot City "Un" Pros. Sound bitter? You bet. When I make a commitment in my work I keep it, and if circumstances effect it, I communicate early and often, then work my butt off, even after hours to deliver. They did none of this. I would have been completely happy if they would have offered any kind of solution to the problem, but they just ran away.
