Paul was one of the best contractors that I've ever worked with (from any trade). He showed up when he said he would and got straight to work. He was self sufficient and didn't bother me at all during the entire job. Even when the scope of the project increased Paul didn't complain or raise the price. My chimney look immaculate. I happily paid more than what he quoted me. I'll be going with Paul for all of my masonry needs for as long as he's in the business. If you're considering going with him for a project he's well worth it.

Let me preface this review by stating that I have nothing to gain by writing this review. I am a real estate agent however I have no affiliation with any specific contractors of any type therefore I have nothing to gain by writing this. This review is based solely on my own experience with Bill Lewis for the inspections he performed on my own home. Having said that, I deal with home inspectors all of the time and like any profession there are some that are better then others. I just feel as though credit should be given where it’s due so I’m writing this review from a view point that the average home owner probably doesn’t have because of my active involvement with inspections for my clients. Bill was tremendous in every way possible. Not only did he spend almost 4 hours at our home (not the norm…usually whole house inspections are completed within 1.5-2 hrs). This is a reflection of how very thorough he is. Not only does he have decades of construction experience but he’s also a teacher who knows a ton about every component of home construction. He was very accommodating, patient and took the time to explain all details of his findings using terms easily understandable regarding construction/electrical/plumbing/architecture etc. I can’t stress enough the importance of having someone like Bill who IS certified (many people don’t realize that very often “home inspectors” are not nor do they have to be certified. He performed tests on every aspect of our home and went above and beyond any inspection I’ve ever been a part of. He explained which repairs should take priority and which ones are superficial/cosmetic. We are very pleased with using his services and would vouch for his professional integrity any time. I 110% recommend using Lewis Property Inspection and Contracting for any building service you have.

Had a complete basement rebuild. Was more than impressed with Danny's ability to take my less than organized vision for the finished product and bring it to fruition. Danny has a tremendous work ethic and desire to satisfy his customers. I asked for a style not typical around Columbus that I discovered while living in the western U.S. And Danny not only captured it but put in extra time to meet my expectations. I highly recommend Danny and his staff for your framing and drywall needs. The only thing more impressive than his work ethic is his affable and trustworthy personality!

After having two contractors mess up the foundation and framing (by not following the permitted plans) of my new room addition, I hired Blair’s. Shawn, Ty and Jake came in and fixed the foundation walls and brought the framing up to code in order to pass inspection. They came in and literally saved the day. Everyday they come on time and have followed the plans as they were intended. They have been upfront with me on costs and have worked hard to keep me up to speed throughout the process. I highly recommend these guys for big and small projects.

Russ is so easy to work and communicate with. I had a framing job that was relatively straightforward that he completed in less than a day. His honesty, his responsiveness and his quality of work is the reason he deserves 5 stars! I highly recommend him for your carpentry needs. I hope to use him in the future, as he was also more affordable than others. So happy I found a new carpenter!

I am a single female on a tight budget who knows very little about home repairs/remodeling. I am wary of being "taken" due to this, and thus have put off my kitchen "redo" for several years. Paul and his assistant, his granddaughter, have been outstanding. They have been punctual, communicative, offered suggestions, and come in under budget. They have also been quite patient when I have added a couple of things or changed course mid-way (glad they aren't reviewing me as a customer :). To top if off, they are positive and enjoyable to be around. My refaced cabinets look great and my backsplash and new range hood go in next week. I can't wait to see the final results!

They came in and fixed the damage caused by another contractor I had hired, not through Thumbtack. They were timely and were very cautious of my funds. They attempted to reuse as much as possible so that I didn’t have to buy all new material again. They painted, took out and replaced vinyl floors, and fixed anything I needed. They are not fast, but are very efficient, detailed, and quality oriented. I will use Mid Ohio Contracting for all of my house repair and update needs in the future.

I met Darrell on a job site we were both subcontracting. He impressed me with his knowledge and his good work! After working with him and seeing his abilities in drywall, framing, interior/exterior painting, cabinet installation and flooring, I know this guy learned from someone who took the time to show him the right way to build things. Stand-up guy, respectful, take charge-attitude, hard-worker.

I had Craig finish about half our basement. The job included framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, paint and finish work (all but plumbing). He was quick to respond with an estimate, started working on plans and permits immediately and kept at the job the entire time. I was informed of progress and next steps throughout the process. He remained flexible and provided good suggestions. Price was competitive with other contractors and quality was top notch. I would definitely hire him for another job and recommend him to others.

I needed work done to prepare my home for sale; it was in Powell. I had three contractors bid on the jobs; on all jobs, Mark was the lowest or near the lower amount. The work included basement work, backyard decking, and sub- flooring. I was extremely pleased with the work that was done, and the quality of his work was reflected in the sale price and comments of those that saw the home.

Total bathroom remodel on my 1920s home. Completely new design, new fixtures, porcelain tile floor, drywall, baseboard, paint, etc. He enlarged our bathroom drastically by taking 2/3 of a walk-in closet and installed a beautiful tile shower. BEST PART: our gorgeous custom handcrafted live-edge wood vanity!!! Joel has an art degree and it SHOWS!! We're getting so many compliments. Also the tile floor is PERFECT and he worked with us to source quality materials that fit our budget. He's also better at communicating with us than other contractors we've known. He really cares about his work and was realistic about estimates and time frames (the job took longer than we expected but he was upfront every step of the way). If you're tired of "big-box" decor and want something unique, we definitely recommend Joel for design, remodeling, and custom work!

Jeremy was a pleasure to work with! He was patient with us and took our project in phases that were easy to understand. He met and beat deadlines, stayed within budget, did amazing work and even repaired some items that were messed up from a previous contractor. We are thrilled with value we received from Prunick Building Services and highly recommend them.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
