Paul was one of the best contractors that I've ever worked with (from any trade). He showed up when he said he would and got straight to work. He was self sufficient and didn't bother me at all during the entire job. Even when the scope of the project increased Paul didn't complain or raise the price. My chimney look immaculate. I happily paid more than what he quoted me. I'll be going with Paul for all of my masonry needs for as long as he's in the business. If you're considering going with him for a project he's well worth it.

Larry was a wonderful find. He is great to work with. He is good at communication, which is hard to find in building trades and interior contractors. He was on time each day and honest and realistic about time for completion. I highly recommend Larry. Debra Carlton

We are doing a kitchen remodel on our 1973 home. After taking down the soffits we realized the electrical situation was a disaster. Doug did a thorough job of getting our wires not only ready for drywall, but troubleshooting issues, color coding our wires, adding outlets and more. In the last three years we have worked with many contractors and I can say that Doug is top notch. He is not only reliable and dependable but honest as well. He quoted us a fair price, but the job ended up being more in-depth than what it seemed. We tried to pay him more for his time, but he replied that he is a man of his word, and did not take the extra pay. We feel lucky to have found him and absolutely recommend his services.

Toby was extremely professional. He was the only contractor I contacted who came when he said he would AND got me an estimate when he said he would. Toby did a great job on our fence project. He worked with me to design exactly what I wanted for the different areas of the yard. He finished the job quickly and it looks great! I would highly recommend him. I'm thinking about contacting him again for some other jobs I need done around the house!

I very much liked working with Rodolfo and Natural Green Landscape. They are adept at doing hardscape and created a wonderful front perspective for the property. Rodolfo knows a lot about plants and where they will thrive. His team is punctual and worked through some difficult weather conditions in the spring.

Jordan contacted with me ball park estimates the same day, and then gave me actual estimates of my property the next day. He clearly stated what all he includes in the price and it was everything i needed. Leaf clean up, weeding, edging, mulching, trimming, mowing.....it was all taken care of the next weekend. He communicated to me exactly when he'd be there with his crew; his payment model is very accessible too. Don't worry about having to get a check book out because he makes that easy too. All in all, I will definitely use Jordan and his landscaping business through out the spring and summer, and probably next year too! Highly recommend.

I needed work done to prepare my home for sale; it was in Powell. I had three contractors bid on the jobs; on all jobs, Mark was the lowest or near the lower amount. The work included basement work, backyard decking, and sub- flooring. I was extremely pleased with the work that was done, and the quality of his work was reflected in the sale price and comments of those that saw the home.

Total bathroom remodel on my 1920s home. Completely new design, new fixtures, porcelain tile floor, drywall, baseboard, paint, etc. He enlarged our bathroom drastically by taking 2/3 of a walk-in closet and installed a beautiful tile shower. BEST PART: our gorgeous custom handcrafted live-edge wood vanity!!! Joel has an art degree and it SHOWS!! We're getting so many compliments. Also the tile floor is PERFECT and he worked with us to source quality materials that fit our budget. He's also better at communicating with us than other contractors we've known. He really cares about his work and was realistic about estimates and time frames (the job took longer than we expected but he was upfront every step of the way). If you're tired of "big-box" decor and want something unique, we definitely recommend Joel for design, remodeling, and custom work!

We recently had Philip Evangelisti, of Sunny Ridge, complete a paver patio for our new home. I originally reached out through Thumbtack for someone to build a patio. Philip was the first of several contractors to respond to my request. My husband and I set up a time to meet with Philip to discuss our requirements. He arrived in a timely manner, and presented himself in a very professional manner. I already had a basic design in mind, so Philip worked off of that plan to finalize a drawing for us. He made numerous suggestions as to the best way to approach our project, as well as helping to guide us regarding what type of materials would best serve our purpose. After a couple of meetings with Philip and obtaining a quote for the work, we felt confident that he could take on the project and do a great job. Let me mention that we often like to hire entrepreneurs in order to help them get started in their business and allow them to hone in on their skills. With that desire in mind, we hired Philip to build our patio. Although he is a little young, he has quite a bit of experience and knowledge in numerous areas. Our faith in his skills indeed paid off. Philip worked with us throughout the entire project to make sure that we were informed about what, why, and how he was doing things. Since we were building a portion of our patio over the top of a concrete slab, it was necessary for him to make modifications in order to have one continuous flat patio upon completion. My husband and I shopped for the necessary supplies, and even had a couple of calls with him to make sure that what we were getting would work. (These calls were on a weekend, and while he was out of town, but he was more than happy to talk with us.) We set up delivery of our supplies, and Philip promptly got started on our project. He often hired his brother to help him with the job. The two of them worked hard, in the hot summer heat, and completed the patio in a timely manner. Philip knew what he was doing, he knew how to do it, and took great care each step of the way. I made a modification to the way we were going to have our steps, and Philip just took it in stride and worked with us to make it work. He even went with us to purchase the supplies and helped us figure out what we needed. We are EXTREMELY pleased with our patio, and have received numerous compliments about how beautiful it turned out. Unfortunately I did not take pictures of the completed project before we put everything on the patio, but I believe you will see just how awesome it looks from these pictures. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to hire Philip again if we would have any other project. I also would certainly recommend him to anyone that is looking to hire a contractor. His prices are more than fair, he often went above and beyond what was required, and he is willing to work hard to get the job done in a professional and timely manner. Debbie Scott

Steve & Bob did a great job with my bluestone walkway. Steve came out promptly for the estimate, arrived when he said he would and confirmed his estimate - then gave me a day the following week. The two brothers and some workers were able to complete it in that one afternoon (with a little fine tuning the next day). It was a bit tricky because they had to match the level of a carport on one end of the walkway and a sidewalk on the other end which were different levels and not square, but they figured it all out. Bluestone isn't as simple as brick/pavers, so I was glad they had the experience with it. I also asked for a "random pattern" and while that takes more time, it turned out just how I wanted. Very pleasant to work with, tidy, attention to detail. I have asked them to give me a quote for another hardscape project. Note: I took a little chance with them because they didn't have any reviews at the time. I wish I had started with them, as they took over from my first contractor from Thumbtack (All Around Labor), who despite 70+ 5-star reviews had only got about 25% done in over 2 months with excuse after excuse. He was a nice guy but he would come out by himself and work for like 2 hours and then I wouldn't see him for weeks. Wish I had just started with Imperial. The point being just because another contractor has a lot of reviews and Imperial may not have as many, doesn't necessarily indicate what you are going to get.

Mr Hutchins is a highly skilled contractor who can tackle any job in home improvement. He has renovated my home inside and out, including a new roof, siding, kitchen, bathrooms(including custom shower and bath install). His attention to detail is excellent, and he does not slap a job together and leave. If something needs attention, he is on top of it. I would recommend to anyone.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
