Michael Boc did an amazing job turning my gutted house into an attractive, livable space. Everything in the house needed repairs, and he was more than capable of the renovations, including new drywall, wall insulation, flooring, outdoor siding, and a beautiful bathroom remodel. He's not only very skilled, but has a great eye and pays attention to detail. Michael really went above and beyond on the many projects involved in fixing this house. He was always kind and lovely to work with - I'll be calling him again, and would absolutely recommend him to anyone.

I gave Chuck and Chris a picture of mudroom lockers that I liked, and they really matched the picture and they matched them to my existing kitchen cabinets to a T!! I am so pleased with the work, and I am hoping to re-hire them for some crown molding work in our dining room!

Rodney did an awesome job for us! He had to start from the beginning to install our first dishwasher. He did plumbing, electrical and tore out a cabinet which had granite countertops. Very professional, talked with us as the installation was progressing. We cant wait to have him for our next home project!

We did hire Paul Decker to do some work at our house in Painesville Ohio. These jobs included replacing all the screens in the gazebo painting and also refinishing our deck. Mr. Decker was prompt and completed the job within a few days. Everything was neat and clean up was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable about how to accomplish the job and Helped us choose the proper screens for the gazebo. It looks much better without all of the old holes and wear signs. We also wanted a gate custom built for our deck. He manufactured this and painted it to match the rest of the railing around the deck and it works perfectly. The price was fair and I would highly recommend handyman services.

I am 68 years old and have hired many contractors in my time and i must say that Paint Masters were the best i have ever dealed with. I am a stickler and a former tradesman myself so i am not exactly easy to please. These guys did everything expected and then some. The price was about half of the other quotes i received. They did the best top quality work, and even repaired some large holes in my drywall for free! I would reccommend these guys to anyone, in fact i am hiring them to refinish my wood floors next month. 5 Stars for Dennis and his crew!

Jaspar arrived on time and was able to do what was needed in professional manner. He was willing to get a few materials needed and got started without delay. He checked back with me when done. Couldn't have asked for a better result. Thank you! He did a window repair, screen door repair, and a repair to the base cabinet/sink. I was very pleased with the speed he got to it and his clear communication.

John has done work for us in the past, and we were so glad to find him on Thumbtack again. He put in a new bathroom cabinet, sink, faucet , and flooring for us, as well as an additional faucet in the kitchen. He is a great guy who does great work, and will go above and beyond to see that you are happy. Look forward to using him again in the next couple weeks for some new lattice outside. I initially was looking for an estimate for cabinets to be painted. Rylie Renovations responded quickly, scheduled a time to review the effort and submitted a proposal. The work evolved into a kitchen design which included repairing some work the builder didn’t do well and some damage from a prior contractor. Through the entire process he was extremely professional, transparent about the specific work being done, costs were in line with estimates and the impeccable quality was beyond amazing. I noticed He even fixed some little things that he saw along the way, and didn’t increase the price! I’m very pleased with the work, the quality and the manner in which it was done. The price was reasonable too. I will definitely hire him for all my other projects. Kudos for a job well done.

GHS repaired a custom made window on my old home; they were the only ones I could find to take on this job, and they did a fantastic job! While on site, they also raised my kitchen cabinets to accommodate a new fridge and tightened my loose bathroom faucet. They were easy to schedule with, on time, efficient and professional. Highly recommend them!

His carpentry skills were excellent and you would never know the dishwasher wasn't always there. I would not hesitate to hire Nathan again for any future projects.

My husband and I have used J&J for two big interior projects. We had custom wainscoting installed and painted in a large area. The work far exceeded our expectations and we were so thrilled that it encouraged us to use Justin's talented carpentry on a major renovation of our living room. This included fabrication and installation of a coffered ceiling, built in floor to ceiling book case, and transformation of existing tv cabinet into functional dry bar. Probably one of the best things about working with Justin is the vision he has for a project. In both projects, we had an idea of what we wanted, but no designs available or specific thoughts how to make it work. This was probably for the best, because the design that he came up with, the way he made things work truly speak to his talent as a carpenter. We could not be happier with any aspect of his work. From start to finish: 1. He was prompt in meeting with us and getting a fair quote 2. Started the project when stated 3. We both felt very comfortable having him and his partner in our home 4. Clean! We've never experienced anyone so considerate both during and after work. They treated our home like it was their own 5. The thing that really sold us was his attention to detail and perfection. He cared how things would look just as much as we did. We threw a couple of new ideas at him during the construction and he was more than welcome to the ideas and made them work. We are so happy with everything, we have plans to use J&J for a number of projects that previously we probably wouldn't have even bothered with. If you are looking for professional but approachable work, you really can't go wrong with J&J. We recommend them as highly as possible. We feel so lucky to have found "our guy".

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
