I used Hess tree service to prune, trim, and clear out dead branches in 4 trees. Each tree was a different type and needed different techniques in order to conform to their natural shape. They did a fine job on each tree, and kept me informed as to their progress. Their communication was very important to me, and their employees were very attentive to my suggestions. They cleaned up after themselves, and went beyond my expections, which are high. Tree service companies come and go, but, Hess has proven that they are "all in". I've referred them to others, and will call Jeremiah for all my tree service needs.

My yard was a mess! The mulch beds were falling apart and had old mulch and ripped plastic underneath. The shrubs were beyond control. It would have taken me a week straight to get my yard looking good. I got Joe's name and number from a buddy of mine, so I called him. Joe came out and actually quoted me pricing for what he was going to do. He walked all through my yard telling me what would look good and what needed to be done. Very helpful and knowledgeable ! Free estimate too! I hired him for the job and he came within 3 days with a crew! He transformed my yard into a beautiful place that I can enjoy being in now! I even gained about 2 feet of yard all along my tree line, which was a mess and scary looking! It took 1 day and a half hour the next day so he could double check things! Joe is a great guy and now a friend! I recommend him to anyone that needs landscaping or yard work! Thanks Joe! Chris

When I posted a request for proposals for lawn work at our new home, H&T was the first to provide a full proposal, and it covered all of the items we wanted. A mowing crew showed up on the day we closed on the house and did a great job. The employee introduced himself before he started mowing. We are very impressed by the professionalism!

Joe Sr. and Joe Jr. were very easy to work. They listened to what we wanted to have done as well as offered other suggestions to properly trim 4 large tress in our yard. It took a little while to get the job complete, mostly due to weather conditions, but they were very thorough while on the job. They provided a good service for a good price so we would recommend Policastro Tree Service to others.

Big Ox Pro Lawns has delivered a beautiful landscape for our home. They took care of everything in one day. After a few days, some plants were looking weak, and I send a picture and a message and a few days later everything was replaced to match the quality of what they had delivered since day one. A great company with personable service and care. We hope to work with them next year to add some more tress to the backyard and upkeep the rest of the landscaping. :)

The owner and his wife are very responsive and they did a great job cutting down a tree of mine that was damaging my property. Outside of the regular hazards of cutting down a tree, they also had to be mindful of electric lines that ran through the tree. They gave great updates, including kindly texting me photos before and after the work was done, as I live out of state, and they were very professional and courteous to text ahead of time to confirm their arrival time. Although promptness is important, there was plenty of flexibility in completing the job. However, even knowing that, when they were running later than they planned on getting at my property, due to good reasons, they let me know ahead of time which speaks volumes about the integrity of their service and keeping clients up to date. I didn't get multiple quotes so not sure about value, but seemed like they were reasonably priced. I used them on this one project and am already planning on using them again for some other projects that they are quoting. I would definitly recommend them. And, just to note, I am not a friend or family member trying to talk them up. Up until they did this work, I had never met them before.

We hired Beach's Tree & Lawn Care to drop, trees, grind stumps and remove brush. We have had several tree companies to our home to do yard work over the past 3 years, and Beach's was by far the most professional and prepared company we have worked with. We had a massive tree on our fence line hanging over our house, deck and pool, and they were amazing! We will continue to use Beach's going forward. The owners were very easy to work with! We are very pleased!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
