I contacted city pro not knowing what to expect in regard to my problem. I had a garage full of items needing to be trashed. Was I ever surprised at the response. Not only were they willing to help but immediately responsive. Met with them less than two hours later and all my problems were solved including the trash. Their service was absolutely great . The price was more than fair and it was so easy. I highly recommend anyone to give them a call if you need help

Nate was great. We had to replace the subfloor in our master bedroom due to the previous owner. Nate came in and knocked it out in one day. He cleaned up after the work was completed. We were so impressed we even talked about redoing the master bath and finish the basement.

I had a pipe burst and had water damage on my main floor that went through the floor into my basement which was finished. I called Paul and he came out right away. All the carpet on the main floor and basement needed to be replaced along with the vinyl on the main floor. There was drywall damage. After Paul was finished with the repairs, my house looked better than it did before. Thank Paul!

Brad and his staff delivered as promised and we couldn't be more satisfied with their work. Our basement was completely and professionally remodeled and Brad worked with us every step of the way including changes that we wanted to make during the process. They also made it a point to clean up each day and respected our home which is a nice touch if you have had other contractors that didn't do this in the past. I would highly recommend Brad and Alhi to anyone for any construction needs. Easy and professional to work with and there are no surprises.

David renovated our basement into a lovely in-law suite for my mother. Not only did he make our project a priority since I’m pregnant and wanted it done before baby arrives, he took the time to advise us on options that would be more functional and would save us money! I’m so impressed with the work they’ve done. Gramma is gonna get all settled well before baby arrives and I have peace of mind knowing the work was done well and is all up to code.

Scott is AMAZING! A true craftsman in every sense of the word. His attention to detail and the quality of his work is second to none. Working with him was the best part of our basement project. He designed, built and installed a GREAT oak built-in entertainment center in our basement that allows adjustment for a larger tv, provides plenty of storage for our kids' games and toys and conceals our sump pump and gas & water shut off valves. We went with oak as it will stand up better to wear and tear from our kids. He also built 2 doors, installed all of our trim and casings and installed a stair rail. One of the doors was an uncommon size for room with a low ceiling and it matches all the other doors in our house. He stained everything to match the existing doors and trim in our house and nailed it. Scott is a hard and diligent worker. He doesn't mess around, goes straight to work and focuses on the job. He knows his craft and it shows in the work he does and his attention to detail. We couldn't be more thrilled with how everything turned out and are already planning our next project with Scott.

I had ceramic tile installed in my basement Family Room. This was no easy job-due to the fact that the room was 20 X 14 and one end of the floor needed to be leveled. To add to my unusual request....I of course wanted Black Grout!!! Which is not carried by most places. Jake and Shawn took it all in stride and delivered a perfect installation job. The floor was leveled and the tile and grout work looks amazing. They were very professional from Jake's initial quote to his and Shawn's installation. Also, I was very pleased with their daily update on their progress and the fact that each day they clean up the area, leaving it just as that had found it that morning.....I would definitely use and recommend United Building Solutions

We had DS redo our unfinished half basement space. It was a particularly difficult space to do as the furnace, hot water heater, craw space and storage shelves needed enclosed but maintain full access. The ceiling required 2 soffits in order to maintain height and one wall an angle to save floor space. It was their design ideas that we liked over their competiters right away and the workmanship was spot on.

I hired Miami Valley Painting & Restoration to complete by basement ceiling. I cannot say enough good things about Michael and his crew. They not only did an amazing job, but they ALWAYS cleaned up before they left, and the price...wow!...the price was extremely fair. For all of you single ladies, who are supporting children, and always feel like you are being gouged when you hire people to do work you are not 100% familiar with, this company is the one for you. My 4 quotes had more than a $3,700.00 difference for the same job!!! I went with Michael because my gut trusted him. This was the best decision. I will hire this company again...and again. The honesty, quality, and sincere concern that I was happy always was apparent. Even a week after the job was completed, I was contacted to make sure that everything was okay. MVP&R, I cannot thank you enough for the job well done and the honesty.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
