My son said, "Mom, the bunkbed doesn't move anymore." That's all I needed to hear. AJ made that possible. He secured my sons' wobbly triple bunkbed to the wall. He's going to do some other projects for me in the future. Thank you AJ!

My husband and I had a couple rooms painted, a wall repair, a ceiling water damage repair, and a sink installation. Everyone we worked with was so kind and respectful. They were always on time and communicated with my husband and I very step of the way. The job they did was amazing. I added on services midway through with no hassle and quick turn time. I changed paint color for one room with no grief. They did all the little extras to make us thrilled. Even did a few paint touch ups we didn't even request. For the ceiling repair, they went out of their way to match the paint color on our ceiling that was painted in the 1990's - it looks amazing! We've already asked for another estimate for another job. Will be hiring them again. Reasonable price and excellent services!! You won't go wrong!

Dave replaced our worn out linoleum with a waterproof "wood" vinyl floor. Did a high quality job, including choosing quality underlayment, which I knew nothing about. The flooring looks professionally installed and Dave worked around our schedule. Dave also installed a new basement door, helping choose a door that met our specifications and he made improvements to the structure of the wall that it was mounted in so that the door was in more soundly than the one it replaced. This job, too, was done on our schedule and with professional quality. We have Dave lined up for a couple other projects as well due to his knowledge base, quality work, and reasonable rates!

Steve did an absolutely awesome job on tiling my kitchen walls. This was no small job, either -- over 120 sq ft of subway glass tiling. My kitchen looks showroom-perfect. His attention to detail is beyond comparison. Highly recommend Steve, and I'll be using him again for other house projects.

Shopped multiple companies before deciding on this one. Comparing companies is definitely not as easy as comparing apples. We felt most comfortable with the information our sales person (Edward) was giving us. They came thru with the price, time frame and service that they told us to expect. Its a big investment and i am glad we chose them. Very professional and highly competitive with their pricing.

I had a huge driveway that needed to be replaced. Solid Foundations answered the call. They did exactly what I wanted and more. Even gave me suggestions that would better fit my needs. From tearing out the old driveway to forming and pouring the new one, they did an excellent job. I had a drainage problem that caused my old driveway to crack and fall apart. They suggested putting in a french drain to alleviate that problem. They added the french drain in and also put in a very nice retaining wall for us. They were very versatile and willing to bend over backward to satisfy our needs. A+ Rating.

Mr. Dix, sent his drywall specialist, Sam Lovins, to perform this job. Sam not only did what we contracted todo, but went beyond the call of duty, and secured a wall, he repaired, to the floor, where it had been knocked loose by a truck bumper. I highly recommend Sam Lovins, for drywall repair, and of course Mr. Dix company, for employing such professionals as Sam Lovins. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of repairs this company provided...

Dan recently replaced all interior doors and exterior. A lot of issues came up with the walls and was able to accomplish all tasks in no time. He placed custom trim and crown molding which turned out amazing. We had a very complex and difficult transionital strip from tile to hardwood which he was able to blend very nicely. We were so pleased with his work we allowed him to place a 12' x 24' composite deck with exterior lighting in the posts. Outstanding work and very knowledgable and professional. Highly recommend for any type of project not only for the pricing but the type of work you get out of it all!! If you would like to see pictures I am willing to provide!

Alex started doing work for me in 2013, when I purchased a new home. That summer he did many small jobs, inside and out. He has continued to do work for me. Most recently he renovated my rental condo. He installed bamboo flooring, where there had been carpet. He replaced the bathroom vanity, sink and wall cabinet. He painted the entire condo and replaced many of the blinds. He did all of this in a reasonable timeframe, so the unit was out of service for the minimum time. He has also done landscaping work for me, removing dead trees and replacing plantings. On top of this--he is a very nice, reliable guy.

Needed to quickly prepare areas in my home in need of attention prior to listing it for sale. Scope of work included removing wall paper, prepping walls for painting, and doing the actual painting. Rooms were two bathrooms. Also painting trim and closet doors and readjusting same in Master bedroom.. Also did a walk-through with me to identify about a dozen other easily fixed items that I would have missed. The job was done on time, with excellent workmanship. Cost was well below what I had expected to pay.Plus they took care of most of the minor things at extremely fair cost.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
