Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Mike was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend to anyone who needs a photographer for their corporate event. He captured the shots that were needed and delivered photos in a very timely manner. Mike jumped in and shot 2 different events in 2 days for us. From beginning to end my experience with Mike was top notch.

My initial phone contact with Moreland Photography was positive, professional and reassuring. The event to be photographed does not occur, however, for over two months so I would have to wait until after that to give a full review.

Holly was perfect for our event. She followed my instructions for candid pictures and also made sure she photoed everyone with the guest of honor. I would definitely recommend Holly for future events of any kind. She was great to work with!

Steve did an amazing job with the photography at our Event. He arrived early and actually ended up staying later than we had booked and didn't charge us. He was having just as good a time at our graduation as our guests did. The photographs he took were excellent lots of candid shots of our guests during the social hour and after the ceremony when the fun and dancing began. And we had the photographs within 72 hours of our event. I also loved all the different links he sent for the photos, a Flickr album to distribute to our residents and their family, a Dropbox with the full size images for print, and another Dropbox with images resized for web use. Above and beyond in every aspect of our booking. From the beginning his reply response was quick and courteous. Thank you so much we will definitely use Steve again for future Corporate Events and personal events.

Mike was excellent from the moment I contacted him through Thumbtack. He was quick to respond to my request and worked with me very easily to coordinate the photo shoot for my mother’s birthday party. Since I was arranging all of this long distance, he made everything very simple for me. He arrived at our event exactly as pre-arranged, 30 minutes prior to the event, and was very professional and worked easily and unobtrusively with the guests. He made his excellent photos easily accessible to me within two days of the event. I would highly recommend Mike and would definitely use him again for any event In the Cincinnati area.

He is the best photographer I could have hired for my special day. I booked him 12-14 hours before my event and he was amazing. I got lucky that I found him. He is extremely professional and I am waiting to see the final photos. He showed me some samples of my pictures a couple of hours after my event. I already love them. Joe was there before time and stayed extra even though it was freezing.

Scott Davis is the photographer's actual name. In a nutshell, he took some "complimentary" photos of us at our consultation to meet him. Took our deposit to hold our date. The photos from the consult were terrible, so we asked for our deposit back when we decided we didn't want to use him for our wedding. He stopped responding to any communication and has not refunded us our deposit. We found Scott on Thumbtack. He sent us a gallery of photos of what he said was his previous work, and the photos were very good. (Now I am quite certain he did not take those photos). He said he needed a $200 deposit to hold our date if he was to photograph our wedding. He also offered a complimentary consultation to meet him, discuss our event and to take a few photos to get comfortable before our event. We had our consultation on June 24th in Lebanon, OH. We discussed our event, style of photos, and he took some photos of us. He asked for my info so he could fill out a contract and send to us to sign and asked for the $200 deposit. We gave him our info and the deposit to hold our date. A few days later, he sent us a gallery of the photos and still no contract, but he had cashed the check immediately. 90% of the photos he took of us were poor quality, blurry, poorly edited, etc. I asked if he would re-edit some of our favorites more to our style and he literally said he could only do so much with the poor quality some of the pictures were (completely admitting his photos were not good). After going back and forth for a few days, with still no contract, and realizing his photos were not even comparable to the samples, we let him know that we no longer wished to use his services for our event. He clearly stated that the deposit was just to hold the date, which we no longer needed him to do; so we requested our deposit back. He said he would take out a percent for his services rendered (which he had said previously were "complimentary"). Then he said he would return the deposit via mail, we have yet to receive anything and he has stopped responding to any of our emails, calls, texts. Basically he took our money and ran - so Thumbtack, you should probably remove him from your service. I've attached a photo of the sample he sent me and then two photos of us from our "Complimentary" consultation. It's pretty obvious that there are major differences... I also have records of all the emails, verbal agreement info, etc. of the encounter if Thumbtack can do anything to help us get our money back.

Candidly photographer in Cincinnati did a horrible job! The pictures were low quality, sometimes blurry, and dark. It was apparent early on that the photographer was inexperienced. She could not get the camera to work accordingly because it was not her camera. She told me that she borrowed the camera from her boyfriend. A camera she had never used before and was, of course, not familiar with its functions. I was very disappointed because the event was my mom's 70th birthday celebration and we wanted a photographer to help us capture the beauty and the magic of the celebration. What we got was garbage. Even my 6-year-old can take better pictures. I have used professional photographers every year for different events so I know what quality professional pictures look like and these were far from that. The photographer is a very nice and honest person (which is why I know all of this detail), but she is not a professional photographer. I felt that Candidly lied to us. They displayed the portfolio of the "Cincinnati Photographer" that was amazing when they responded to my bid for a photographer in Cincinnati. However, the photographer who showed up was, undoubtedly, not the person who took those portfolio pictures. It is sad to know that Candidly sent a novice to practice shooting pictures at our mom's 70th birthday. Our mom was very upset when she saw the pictures. I was very embarrassed that I hired Candidly. If there is such a thing as -1 star, I would give that to Candidly. Shame on you. You should give us our money back. This is not how you run a business. Unhappy customer from California.

My fiance and I decided to elope last minute and we really wanted to commemorate our big day, even though it was on such short notice. Kingsley responded to us promptly and offered us a very attractive deal. On the day, he showed up at the agreed time and was very eager about our big day. We asked for his help with recording the whole ceremony on our personal camera, with which he agreed and helped film it perfectly. Kingsley was very professional and helped both my husband and I (we're both a bit camera shy) for our couple and individual photos. After the wedding, he replied with the finished photos within the same week. They were amazing! Our families and we love them a lot. We are really thankful for what Kingsley did for us! I would definitely recommend his skills for your special event.
