Tom and Kathy are not only professional, knowledgable, and friendly, they are also very, very brave. After a free in home consultation, my mom purchased the very reasonably priced obedience training lasting six weeks. She has 4 Great Danes ranging from 115-150 pounds and they can be a little intimidating but Tom and Kathy came to her house and jumped right in. Tom was great at explaining the commands and behavior that is expected and how to correct bad behavior/habits; this applies to the dogs as well as my mom and me. Tom was also flexible in scheduling the training sessions and available by phone when we had questions or concerns in between sessions. He also tailored the training to each of the dogs' personalities and used different techniques or equipment based on their responses. For example, the Martingale collar worked better for one dog, a harness for another dog, and a haltie for another. My mom and I are both very happy with the changes we see in the dogs behavior and will definitely recommend Abby Lane to friends and family. Big thanks to Tom, Kathy, and little Simba!

Suzie was great! She came to our home and just observed for a few minutes how our dog was behaving and gave us some tips and training that have completely corrected some very negative things we were seeing. We had already taken him for some basic puppy training at 8 months, however he was exhibiting some behaviors like jumping, barking uncharitably, snapping and chewing we couldn't seem to correct. With her guidance and with some work on our side, he has done a 180! She also helped identify some things that are just puppy behaviors and taught us how to correct. Best money we've spent! Suzie is very straight forward with how much time of hers is needed to alter the dogs behavior, and it's much less than we expected (one, 1-hour session in our home)! While our meeting/training want what my wife and I expected it to be, it was the perfect approach I've already recommend her to my brother and would recommend to anyone looking to improve their relationship with their dog and correct some bad behavior. As always, it's usually teaching the humans lol Cannot recommend Suzie enough! Chris

Robin came to our home in Canton to help us with some behavior issues with our rescue Pitty, Diva. She had fear issues with other dogs she encountered on our walks and fear issues with people and animals coming on our property. Robin spent about 4 hours educating us on dog behavior and giving us tools to work with Diva to gain her trust so she would not be so fearful. We have been working with Diva the last few days and have seen great improvement. We had a house guest come stay with us and Diva settled in nicely after her initial meeting with our guest. One of the "aha" moments for me is that if I'm relaxed and not fearful, that will help Diva become relaxed and trusting. We are so happy that we found Robin, and look forward to Divas continued success with Robin's guidance and support.

We got our beagle "Ray" from the shelter. We were having behavior issues and he was afraid of the crate. Barb came to our house and taught us how to train him and make his crate a safe place. We also took her "puppy" class. He now will sit, wait, lay down and kennel up. He is wonderful out in public and loves to go to my son's baseball games. Thank you Barb for helping us so we can enjoy our dog.

Jan has been our pet sitter on two different occasions. I knew the day I interviewed her that she would be fantastic as my pets went directly to her within five minutes of her arriving at my house. She is a female Dr. Doolittle - she adores animals. I could not have been happier with her superlative care of my pets.

I attended Medina County Career Center for animal care. Since graduation/certification, I am looking for employment. I have three yorkies and a cat, so you can see that I love animals. I also have taken cared of horses, other farm animals, etc. when my neighbors are in Florida during the winter months. I enjoy doing what I do. I am energetic, capable, well-trained, dependable and punctual. I also sometimes do house-sitting in conjunction with animal care.

Animal behavior consulting and training provided by certified and educated professionals. We offer classes for puppies and adult dogs of various skill levels. Services for cats are also available. All trainers are nationally certified professional dog trainers by examination offered by the Certification Counsel for Professional Dog Trainers. Additionally, Jennifer is a canine good citizen evaluator, and Amanda is a registered veterinary technician with specialty in animal behavior. The training provided is clicker-based -- we train dogs and cats just like they train whales and wolves!

I currently am in my second year working at One of a Kind Pet Rescue, and aside from that, I have been walking dogs/pet sitting for over one year. I have experience and am comfortable with dogs, cats, fish, turtles, chinchillas, ferrets, and more. As far as dogs, I have handled both small and large breeds, as well as dogs with disabilities and behavioral issues. There isn't any dog that scares me, and I am confident I can handle anyone's furry family member. Throughout the years, I have gained experience in caring for these animals by feeding, bottle feeding, medicating, walking, playing with, transporting, etc.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
