What first drew us to David was the great quality of his pictures; his album and arrangements stood out in contrast to other photographers who left something to be desired. We knew, with him, we would not be disappointed. We were right! The finished product was beautiful and he gave us some of the best pictures we've ever had. He was also wonderful to work with: kind, considerate, funny, and always professional. I would recommend him to anyone I know!

Harshita was very patient - we had 5 little boys that wouldn't stop moving (a 9 yr. old, a 4 yr. old, a 2 yr. old, and 2 under a year old) and she still managed to get some cute shots! And also did a family picture with 15 people - everyone looked good. She made some recommendations that were creative and made for good pictures with good lighting. I would use her again and am recommending her!

We had our first family pictures taken by Dana and she was fantastic!!! Having 2 boys (4 and 2) you never know what to expect from them and Dana was very patient. She made what ever they did work the very first shots were them playing with leaves that was never planned and they are the cutest pictures. Dana is very relaxed and makes you feel comfortable. Once I received my pictures there was a couple more that I wanted and I sent her a message and I got a response the same day. Dana is very efficient and talented!! We will definitely be using her in the future!!!!

Rodrigo was absolutely great. He worked around our schedule and was extremely flexible with time and location. We did a 3 hour outdoor first birthday and family photo shoot. He brought many ideas for us and also was willing to use the ideas we had in mind. The pictures turned out fantastic. We had so many to choose from. He got the final pictures back to us on a flash drive quicker then I could have ever asked for. We will definitely use him again and strongly recommend him to anyone that needs a photographer.

She's awesome!! She did an outside photo shoot of my family. She was willing to go to any spot we wanted and worked with us when my husband had a crazy work schedule. My daughter wasn't even a year old yet so it took a bit of time getting her to sit still. Ashley was super patient! Never once felt rushed. She even got some great candid photos of us that I didn't even know she got! They all came out so beautiful! I will never again go to an over priced photography studio!

Lisa was great. She went along with us to different locations before the wedding. We had a good list of pictures we wanted and she made sure to take them. She did take candid shots and pictures of the venue that were a great addition to our wedding album. She sent us a couple of pictures before the others due my brother's passing. It meant so much to me and my wife to have those pictures.

Amanda is an awesome photographer! We just did a maternity photo shoot, and she showed up with plenty of fun and flattering ideas. On top of that she was very receptive to my own ideas for the shoot, and was willing to brainstorm together to think of photo concepts that we both might have missed on our own. I highly recommend her!

As a working model and Actor I've worked with some of the best photographers this industry has to offer. That being said I would definitely say without a doubt that hands down Isaac would be in the top 5 photographers I have ever had the pleasure of working with and that is saying something but, I believe above all his work speaks for itself.

Shaun did an amazing job on our family portraits, we have a family that is very active and hard to get in one place at the same time and Shaun was very flexible with our scheduling. During the session I feel like he really listened to what we wanted to accomplish too and I really loved the outcome of the pictures taken.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
