After getting several different estimates to replace my existing HVAC system, Builders Heating and Cooling was by far the cheapest price and for top of the line products. I'm glad that I chose Builders Heating and Cooling, the installation was installed with pride in their work and explained everything that I needed to know to operate and the proper maintenance on my new system. Thanks for the great work and will recommend your company to anyone that's in need of any kind of HVAC work. Robert S.

I had Craig finish about half our basement. The job included framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, paint and finish work (all but plumbing). He was quick to respond with an estimate, started working on plans and permits immediately and kept at the job the entire time. I was informed of progress and next steps throughout the process. He remained flexible and provided good suggestions. Price was competitive with other contractors and quality was top notch. I would definitely hire him for another job and recommend him to others.

Always right on time, very professional attitude, and both communicated well. The job went quicker than I thought it would. Overall, the bathroom exhaust fan, piping, and exit out of the roof was excellent craftsmanship. My only issue was that blown in insulation from the attic and a bathroom somehow got all over my bed, all the clothes laying on them, inside all my shoes etc. But the good news is Sheri quickly reached out And we came to an arrangement that would negate my inconvenience. So despite having a little hiccup with my project, I am overall very satisfied with Temperature Pros Team...they do good hvac work and are very professional. I will definitely look to them for future hvac needs.

I needed work done to prepare my home for sale; it was in Powell. I had three contractors bid on the jobs; on all jobs, Mark was the lowest or near the lower amount. The work included basement work, backyard decking, and sub- flooring. I was extremely pleased with the work that was done, and the quality of his work was reflected in the sale price and comments of those that saw the home.

Total bathroom remodel on my 1920s home. Completely new design, new fixtures, porcelain tile floor, drywall, baseboard, paint, etc. He enlarged our bathroom drastically by taking 2/3 of a walk-in closet and installed a beautiful tile shower. BEST PART: our gorgeous custom handcrafted live-edge wood vanity!!! Joel has an art degree and it SHOWS!! We're getting so many compliments. Also the tile floor is PERFECT and he worked with us to source quality materials that fit our budget. He's also better at communicating with us than other contractors we've known. He really cares about his work and was realistic about estimates and time frames (the job took longer than we expected but he was upfront every step of the way). If you're tired of "big-box" decor and want something unique, we definitely recommend Joel for design, remodeling, and custom work!

Dave is a very hard worker, he did a great job with a variety of odd jobs, such as painting, wood repair, changing light fixtures, etc. I would recommend him for a good reliable handyman. Those are hard to find.

Best in the Business hands Down!!! If you want great service and great pricing choose KLIX! The fan went out on my furnace and KLIX was able to determine it was still under warranty and get a warranty replacement part. I only had to pay labor.

I was introduced to John Corry by Randy Best, one of the top commercial real estate brokers in Columbus, which says a lot about John's dependability. I acquired a 24 unit building in South Columbus and John was there to help me rehab each unit one by one. He also did a great deal of welding work on a series of exterior steel porches that needed extensive repairs. John can pretty much do anything including HVAC, plumbing and electric as well as general handyman work, and he does it well and for a reasonable price. One of his greatest assets is that I can trust him to go in and quote a project, send me before and after pictures, and get it down in a reasonable amount of time, all while I am out of state, which says a lot about his trustworthiness and reliability.

I engaged Midwest to install a new HVAC system in my old home. They were very responsive and reasonably priced. The install team arrived on time and were very very professional. They completed the install in less than one day. This was shorter than a previous install I had done on a different system in the house. The explained everything to me and followed up a couple of times to check the system when seasons transitioned from cold to warm months.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
