The best money I ever spent was on Abby Lane Dog Training! When we got Ginger from the pound, she lacked confidence, was fearful, and impossible to walk on a leash. After just six sessions with Tom, our Ginger is now a dream to take on a walk. She has also learned good behaviors around the house by learning proper boundaries and commands. She is happier, and my husband and I are delighted! Tom even went to the dog park with us to work on Ginger's socialization with other dogs. If you want a dog trainer that uses a gentle approach-no fear and no shock treatment, thenTom is your guy. He is punctual, professional, and willing to take the extra time to solve a problem and really get to know the dog. By the time our classes were over, Tom was a member of the family and Ginger was so sad to see him go! I can't imagine a more enjoyable experience. Abby Lane has my unqualified endorsement and I'm looking forward to continuing lessons for Ginger. She is becoming the perfect dog, thanks to Tom!

We had a puppy that was so out of control that he accidentally injured a member of the household, and the injury required stitches. We were in fear that we would have to rehome the puppy. As a last-ditch effort, we hired a trainer. We found L'Chaim Canine on Thumbtack. Jennifer responded within minutes! After sorting through the responses, we felt the most comfortable with Jennifer's background and experience. We purchased 5 sessions, and in that short amount of time, our puppy is a different dog. While he is sometimes distracted and influenced by another dog in the home, this pup has responded very well to the training. He is the best behaved pet in the home now! Best of all, the training was easy on the dog and the humans! I would recommend Jennifer and L'Chaim Canine to anyone in the market for a dog trainer.

My husband and I got our Border Collie (Isis) when he was 8 weeks old. We started training classes with Cindy soon after. Isis is almost 10 years old now.over those nine plus years we went through basic, Intermediate, clicker, canine good citizen, agility, o-gility...pretty much everything Cindy offers. The classes are fun and informative, a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Once we ran out of classes we just kept going back. Cindy is an excellent teacher and trainer. You will learn just as much as your dog if not more. Isis loves going to "school" as we call it. Just saying the word "school" to him makes his ears perk up then he dashes to the back door ready to go. Cindy makes dog training (school) something to look forward to every week. Thanks Cindy.

Having had dogs before, I had a basic understanding of the time and effort that goes into training a dog. It has been many years since our last dog and this time, training a puppy also meant training children to the same routine that we want the dog to learn and grow with. Working with Jeff has been a pleasure. He has provided me with good reminders as to how I need to approach our puppy. He has also provided me with my one-on-one training, so that I know how to instruct my wife and kids in their approach to our puppy. Having a dog in the house allows for great companionship as well as security. Having a dog that respects your authority and responds to your commands allows you to have a smooth interaction and a peaceful home!

Dog training for two high energy dogs! We brought home a husky mix puppy, Lilly, with a lot of personality and intensity. “She’s a handful” was what the foster said to me. Umm, that was putting it mildly. She was Tasmanian devil with gnashing teeth set out to destroy the world! Being responsible puppy owners, we attended puppy school, beginning, and intermediate training classes. Lilly performed well. However, many issues remained that left us feeling like our home was out-of-control. I made the call. Amanda responded right away and we set a date for her to meet us in our home for an hour for an evaluation of the dogs, cats, and the family members. In that first meeting, Amanda had a clear understanding of the issues we faced, and was able to present solutions that seemed reasonable, doable, and fun! We chose the package, and had follow-up sessions as well. What went well: Amanda’s service is superior! She has a way of putting everyone at ease. Everyone! The dogs were calmer, the cats, us. She brings a joyful quite presence to her work that is so helpful. The assigned homework was so easy and produced results that session. I still do many of the exercises every day. Amanda trained me so well that it feels like play, even though I know I am training my dogs each day too. There are so many examples of how Amanda helped us as our dog trainer. But, the most powerful statement I can make about her service is that the Return on Investment (ROI) is phenomenal! We have seen dramatic shifts away from unwanted behaviors, to enjoyable well-trained dogs in such a short span of time. The experience was and continues to be positive. We are so grateful to have had such good luck finding a trainer with the character and integrity of Amanda S. We think you will too.

Dianne did an exceptional job grooming our Goldendoodle Winnie. Winnie looks beautiful! We felt extremely comfortable leaving our puppy with Dianne. She was warm and welcoming, treating Winnie as if she was one of her own. In the past when we would pick Winnie up from the groomer, she was bolting for the door as if to say "let's get out of this place!". However, when we picked her up from Dianne, she was roaming the house and playing with Dianne's dog. We could tell she was very comfortable and not anxious at all! Dianne has earned our business going forward and we highly recommended her services to any pet owner. Thank you, Dianne!

I never had a trainer for any of my dogs through the years as they were all under 20 pounds. So, when Tunco came to us as a rescue, I knew with his size as a puppy I was going to need some help, as an adult he could be 60 to 80 pounds. I choose to work with Susan and never once was disappointed with my choice. What I like the most was that she not only trained my dog but she also taught me in the process of training to understand his behavior and body language so that I could work with him at home in a positive way. Tunco was not without some issues and she always work through the problems in a positive way, limiting the stress on him. She also through this process taught me to understand him better so that if I see him getting stress I can react in a more positive and understanding way to correct the issue. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a trainer for their dog. Jennifer E. Sanchez

Barb is amazing! I had a senior dog that required a lot of medication and specific care. I do not have family in this area to help me with my dog. There were days were I worked long hours or I had to leave town. I would call Barb and she was always willing to help. My dog had an intestinal disease and kidney failure. She took ten different medications a day and at specific times. Barb ALWAYS made sure my dog was taken care of. I knew if my dog needed anything Barb would handle it. Barb was the only person I trusted with her. I don't know what I would do without Barb! She is passionate about her job and is very trusting.

I have a golden retriever that was pulling me down the street and beagle who was aggressive. We trained at Lorenzo's with marcus and he was amazing. He helped us gain control over our rambunctious dogs. He even got my beagle to stop being afraid of every. Since then we haven't had any more accidents in the house and walking down the street is actually fun now. I would recommend marcus to anyone who wants a dog you can take anywhere and not have any worries.

I never thought I would need an underground fence for my pets, but my new pup kept running off chasing after anything that moved. It got to the point that anytime he was outside he had to be on a leash because I was fearful he would take off. Greg selected and installed the underground fence for me and I couldn't be happier. It is so nice not having to worry about whether or not my pup will leave the yard or not. He even installed a fence that has the option to add additional collars in case I get another dog down the road. Well worth it.

Called when they were on their way. Removed a lot of dog waste from the home! So thankful for them so I do not have to do it. My elderly mother uses them as well since she isn't physically able to do it! Would definitely recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
