The DJ made a point to meet with the students days before the dance to explain what kind of experience they would have and how it was going to be different than what they probably had in the past. He explained that he would play music club-style (clean music for young kids of course), mixing songs, he even had a student dance to some sample songs! He asked them which songs they definitely wanted to hear, and which songs should not be played, and that he would then play a variety of music in between. He asked about the cultural composition of the student body, to play music from their culture. I definitely appreciated that type of sensitivity (he even played Italian music for me, the dance planner). The day of the dance he was there hours ahead of time to set up, sound check, he is definitely a professional. During the dance, as usual in middle school, some kids danced until the last song, some just ran around the whole time. We had an after dance survey for the kids, some said the dance floor was the best thing, some said it was too loud and that they wanted older songs; that's so funny, because others complained about the older songs played before! The DJ couldn't play some of the songs requested by the kids because of the school's Wi-Fi restrictions, so that might have influenced some kids' responses. I'm sure some aspects could be discussed and tailored to the younger crowd needs, but overall I appreciate his professionalism and involvement with the students.
