I hired Jim for a few different electrical projects at my house. Today he installed a new light over my sink. It turned out to be rather tricky due to the location and the deteriorated state of the old fixture. Jim figured it out and installed the new light which looks great. A very friendly guy who definitely knows his stuff. His prices are very fair too. I highly recommend.

Eric came out ASAP as an electrician and ended up as so much more. My main was also backing up into my basement and he was able to get it snaked for me within hours of Thumbtack request for help. Main plumbers in the area couldn't come out until 3-4 days later. Also went the extra mile and redid the plumbing under my kitchen sink perfectly. Would (and have already) recommend his services to anyone in need of a solid handyman at a great price. Thanks Eric!!

Jimmy cleared out all the junk leftover from an old above ground pool. He was fast, and gave a reasonable quote before beginning service. While he was here, i found out that Jimmy also repairs garage doors, and he offered to take a look at and fix our broken door for less than the cost of our home warranty copay. I will definitely use him again!

Michael Boc was a consummate professional throughout our complete master bathroom renovation process. His price quote was fair, he was on time and communicated exceptionally well as the project progressed, and he delivered a spectacular renovation despite having to deal with a few unforeseen obstacles (typical when dealing with a house built in the 1920s). I’d recommend Mr. Boc’s services to my own mother (in fact I did), and I intend to hire him again in the future for additional projects.

d3 Services did an amazing job with our remodel. We had 3 bathrooms that needed varying levels of work (demolition, tiling, drywall, plumbing, electrical) and they all turned out beautiful! They are true professionals, they care about the quality of work they do and they make sure you are happy. They came every day as promised - not the norm with many other contractors! I would highly recommend them!

Rod was chosen from five bidders, all of whom were close in their estimates. Unlike the others, he initially mentioned renovation options ( both interior and exterior ) that had not been considered in the planning. No one else "thought outside the box". This was a complete renovation of a house to prepare it for sale: new flooring throughout, new padding and carpeting throughout, much repair work of damaged wood and walls, a wood-burning fireplace rehab; installation of new vanities, sinks, mirrors, med. cabinets and accessories, 5 new ceiling fans, power washing, painting shutters and repair and painting of storage shed, caulking around foundation, installation of all new interior and exterior doors. You can see that the job was all-encompassing and Rod was up to the task and did some unique repairs along the way. The only two detours included four dead electrical outlets that still need to be repaired by an electrician and the time frame ran more than 3 and 1/2 months. If you are willing to be patient, Rod will do a bang-up job for you. He would text pictures of items for my approval before he would make a purchase. He provided me with a receipt for everything that was required for the job. This was an $11,000+ investment, but the new owner is not going to have any headaches once they move in. I hope to hire Rod again for work at my own residence and would comfortably make a referral to anyone in need of his services.

It was a pleasure to work with Vlada. He was very up front, honest, and dependable. He was a tremendous value who was able to meet a very tough budget. He has an excellent eye for design and actually improved on some of our ideas and worked with some last minute changes and didn't go over the budget. He is very hard working and smart. We are already planning on using him for a basement remodel and another bathroom remodel in the next year.

Blaise was excited for the opportunity to be creative in the design of my kitchen. I loved his work so much: attention to detail, artistic/modern features, and reasonable pricing all within a timely manner. He finished the job faster than anticipated and I was extremely impressed. Therefore, I let him take on the unfinished remodeling of both my den and media room-- projects I have put off for years. With considerable expertise and well-timed planning, he and his team had the projects completed before my long awaited family reunion. Needless to say, my family and friends could not stop admiring the work that had been done. “Beautiful” was the most word they used when describing my renovations. I would indorse him to anyone.

Laura has been such a supportive woman who has given me so much more than just design advice! Of course, she very ably held my hand through a small renovation, interior design solutions, staging for sale and now starting on the layout design for an overseas home but she has also counseled me through living abroad!!! She extended me design wise taking me far enough out of my comfort zone to feel refreshed and uplifted by the new interior feel while also pulling in my existing pieces. She is gorgeous all round. You’ll love her, I promise!

Highest Integrity Services completed a renovation of my bathroom (floor, walls, tub, vanity). I would highly recommend them. Dave Hoover, owner, provided thoughtful recommendations in advance, and worked with my final decisions and budget. The renovation transformed a forty-five year old bathroom into one that is up-to-date. Highest Integrity cares about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. I highly recommend Highest Integrity Services.

I bought a house in a lovely neighborhood for a great price because it needed lots of work. I hired GCG to install floors and some carpet, new lighting and painting throughout, new windows and doors and a remodel of the upstairs bath. Everything turned out beautiful. The guys were very courteous about keeping things clean as they worked. The pace of the work stayed consistent until the job was done. I’m so very impressed. Because it was a renovation loan, the bank sent out an inspector as the work progressed and the inspector was also impressed. My home had immediate equity of $28000. I’m a very happy customer and highly recommend this company to my friends, family and colleagues. -Shannon G.

David was very quick to respond and submit a proposal to us. He was very helpful in the design process. Great communication with scheduling changes due to poor weather and would always return our call within an hour of us calling. His crew was very professional and polite. We are beginning a kitchen remodel with Paradigm Renovations in June. The kitchen design David did for us was exactly what I have dreamt about. We highly recommend using them for your home projects. He seems to have the crew to handle everything a homeowner could need. His pricing was very competitive with other contractors.

Keith is my general contractor and architect of choice for any of my home improvement projects. He is very conscientious of price and working within a budget while providing the most bang for your home improvement buck. He has no problems working with the home owner on design and budget to get you to your goal. I have used him on several major projects including a two story addition with basement, a partially covered deck and two basement remodels (the new basement and the original.) I highly recommend him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
