I would recommend Pat and his crew to anyone. They did a fantastic job regrading our landscape, rebuilding our deck and ensuring that we no longer had water problems in our basement. He went above and beyond on a daily basis to make sure the job was done at the highest quality possible. Absolutely love the work!

Removed my previous landscape that was a big project with lots of perennials and ground cover and added new soil, new layout, some new perennials and used some of my perennials, installed a steel edging and lots of mulch--Tim and his helpers were very nice and professional and wanted to please me--which they did.I would recommend them. My yard had been taken over by rats because of poor drainage, a dilapidated shed, and my three big dogs' ample food supply to them, yuck. Being that my neighbors are running their gutters to my fenceline, I came up w the mother of all fixes. I want to install a rain garden. At the fenceline. At the fence. If you've researched rain gardens, you'll know I'm now not only asking for the moon, but the stars as well. Austin arrived on time, listened to my maniacle ramblings and complaints, and with his naturally patient ways, he assured me that his recent education was really going to be the assist because he did an entire project on rain gardens!! Austin is that rare guy who gets a big childish grin when he gets to tackle something new and challenging. He'd be back with the plan in a bit. I jumped up and down in my kitchen with my husband when he left. Phase one is complete. The dilapidated shed required heavy machinery, which was unforseen with our quote, but the cement slab was twice as thick as usual, and also laterally reinforced with steal rebar. Bless your heart, Austin. He kindly renogotiated our price, which we found absolutely fair. $100. That's not getting ripped off. I watched it happen, it was such a nuisance with it's permanent slab, but the shed he pushed over with his hands. ?????? We all had a chuckle at the end. We've ordered the plants for the garden; my custom made, custom fitted, eco friendly rain garden. I boast because as challenging as my requests were and still are, my husband and I found the smartest, nicest, most creative, independent, honest, fresh visionary, who honestly can imagine anything we can. Austin is coming back soon to "install" the garden. I've already been able to enjoy the relief of he drains he installed when removing the shed. The rats have been gone for weeks. My mind is resting. We're so squirmy for the next phase. We will be Austin's lifelong customers.

What an amazing guy! He showed up on time, was honest and fair! He did a fabulous job! He leveled an area where there was a tree, he installed three new window wells, raised our fence and graded and seeded the side of our house. We will be using him again for more landscaping needs in the future. Could not ask for a better job! Thanks for making our house beautiful!

Weston provided us with an unbelievable landscape total overhaul at one of our rental properties. He removed a tremendous amount of weeds and overgrowth to start, then installed all new flower beds, a garden, and even repaired a badly damaged rock wall. Lastly he laid new mulch and planted various elements to bring the new groundwork to life. Our tenants are overjoyed and we just cant say enough about how thrilled we are with hiring Weston!!!

We bid out to 3 designers a backyard patio project. The project was to include a Wood-fire Pizza Oven, entertainment space, dining space and lounge space. No other designer came close to Jeremy/JML Landscape in design and in sharing our vision. We have a multi-level backyard living space that we love! The lines are clean and modern while fitting in with the design and flow of our house. Jeremy's bid was within budget and was finished within budget and within an appropriate timeframe. Jeremy and his staff were meticulous with laying every brick and stone. Everyone who worked on the project was professional and responsible. We would not consider using another landscape design company other than JML Landscape for future projects. Would highly recommend JML Landscape Development

Gabriel was very professional and respectful. For a young man he sure does have a lot of experience. He did a wonderful job on my property. He cut down a few old dead trees for me and installed new flower beds around my house an garage. Gabriel also did a paver sidewalk for me from the house to the garage. Three weeks later I called him back to do some home repair for me. I had him paint my living room and three bedrooms and he also tiled the bathroom with marble tile. Excellent service all around. I would use him again and highly recommend him to my friends.

Midwestern Maintenance Group is a pleasure to work with. The first time we called them, I needed my front door repaired. The company showed up within thirty minutes of my call. They did a wonderful job not only repairing the damage but also installing security plates on the door jambs and hinges to prevent future break ins. Soon after we secured their services to install our new dishwasher. The staff that showed up were very polite and professional and had us up and washing in no time. We hired them one more time to clean, weed and mulch our extensive landscaping. They simply do what they promise and they do a great job at a fair price. I'll be keeping their card for future jobs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
