Chris, Scott, Dave and team did a wonderful job in our home. We had the banister rail re-built which turned out better than I could have imagined, closets added in our master, doors hung, baseboards, door and window trim throughout. The team were pleasant to work with and talked me through any issues that arose. Chuck was easy to work with and we will be sure to work with BS Remodeling again in the future.

If there were 10 stars, I would give them 20! I have never met a contractor so kind, professional, accommodating, talented, meticulous and conscientious about their work. This is an amazing family business. Customer care and service is their number one concern and what they do best, along with outstanding work. They do ANYTHING they can to please their client. I had a bathroom painted including walls, door, trim and vanity...with special effects. The job was done within two days, and I actually paid more than they quoted because it would have been insulting to PJ for everything he did, if I had only covered the quote. I am absolutely having them back to do the entire interior of our home including windows. If you need a reliable amazing contractor, I highly recommend D3 Services--their work ethic and talent far exceed expectations.

So far so good. I had called a national window business and got a price over the phone that was double what was then offered by Raetrent. Unhappy with the first price, I tried looking for a better deal. I put my info on Thumbtack and got several replies of a basic price guesstimate for what I was getting in to. He was the only one who said 'hey, I have an opening tomorrow, let me come out.' So I scheduled a consultation with him. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to make sure I understood too. The windows aren't in yet, but I feel confident I am going to be very pleased.

Bob was exactly what I needed in the pinch I was in. Weekends are hard to find a handyman he came out they always want to charge you a "emergency fee" to just board it up for a few days. Bob reached out and came next day and repaired my broken window in my door within an hour. Best part, no emergency call cost and excellent pricing. Thanks Bob!

Wilson came to clean our gutters, which hadn't been touched in over 2 years. He did a great job, especially considering he not only had to clean them but disassemble them to get them fully cleaned. Even though it was a two day job, Wilson stayed in our budget. We were so pleased with his hard work and the quality he put into it, we had him fix an outdoor pipe that burst, rehang a storm window, power wash our front entrance, and we plan to hire him for many more projects. He was hard working, did a good job, easy to contact, reliable, professional, cleaned up after himself, and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend him to friends and neighbors.

My house closed on the 4th of July weekend. I really needed new flooring and painting done before I could move in. I was staying with relatives. I called all the local contractors in my small city. I either got answering machines, or no call backs. Anthony Hancovsky gave me a quote on Thumbtack and drove all the way to my city 2 1/2 hours away on a Holiday weekend to do the work so I would be able to get into my new home. He drove back and forth until the job was done, and at reasonable prices. I would recommend Anthony Hancovsky from Emperial Homes.

I bought a house in a lovely neighborhood for a great price because it needed lots of work. I hired GCG to install floors and some carpet, new lighting and painting throughout, new windows and doors and a remodel of the upstairs bath. Everything turned out beautiful. The guys were very courteous about keeping things clean as they worked. The pace of the work stayed consistent until the job was done. I’m so very impressed. Because it was a renovation loan, the bank sent out an inspector as the work progressed and the inspector was also impressed. My home had immediate equity of $28000. I’m a very happy customer and highly recommend this company to my friends, family and colleagues. -Shannon G.

Sometimes to truly gauge a business you have to see how they respond when things go wrong, because let's face it, a business is only human. Short story, there was a problem with installation. I reached out to our contact person, Lance, and was immediately swarmed by Lance, Dustin and Sam all scrambling to remedy the situation, which they did, personally supervising the situation. I have since ordered the remaining windows in my house to be done by Window Universe due to their willingness to stand by their work and products.

I sat through numerous window estimates before I finally came across Hallmark. Everyone tried to oversell me on what I was looking for except for this company. They came out, listened to what I wanted in windows and delivered with a great product. This company was the only one "in the ballpark" when it came to budget. We got our windows installed completely yesterday and they look great!! We have a 1922 house and barn and they made it look authentic but updated. I think that their windows are incredibly nice, easy to use and have great features. The crew installing was friendly and worked efficiently on the project. We had a huge project of 37 windows between two buildings. In the past I used big window companies that advertised on TV....and got stuck with companies that went out of business and guarantees that were no longer good. That's why I came to Thumbtack to look for something different and I found Hallmark. I highly recommend them.

I purchased a home in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. The house and garage were condemned and scheduled to be torn down by the city. The house was a detriment to this beautiful neighborhood. Mike and his crew at MK Design Build redesigned and rebuilt the entire home. They had to replace all of the plumbing, wiring, interior walls, roof, front porch, back porch, doors, windows, and refinish the hardwood floors. MK Design Build finished this house ahead of schedule and under budget. Now this is the best looking house on the street. When the crew at MK design build refinished the house it looked and smelled brand-new. Sadly, the garage was too far gone to rebuild so Mike and his crew demolished it and hauled every piece of it away. The next project I have planned is to have MK Design Build rebuild the garage for me and we're going to turn it into a man cave! Can't wait, super job Mike.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
