We are a small not-for-profit paranormal team located near Pittsburgh in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Butler Paranormal Research Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the spiritual and scientific research and investigation of intelligent, residual hauntings, poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena. Butler Paranormal Research Society was started by Tim Roxbury in December 2009. Tim became interested in the paranormal at a young age. In 2008, he joined a paranormal team in Titusville; later, he decided to pursue his quest in finding the truth and start a paranormal research team closer to Butler. Since then, he has investigated some of the most well-known locations known for paranormal activity. Through his experiences in dealing with the paranormal, Tim and his team are able to offer peace of mind to those who are experiencing something they cannot explain. Often times there are logical explanations for the seemingly unexplainable things that can occur in a residence or business. Our investigative and research team begins all investigations with a careful degree of skepticism. We do not claim to cleanse or remove any entities that may be present. We do not use Ouija boards, tarot cards, or other forms of occult practices. It is very important to our investigators to respect the privacy and personal property of those we service. Our mission is to research, study and investigate claims of alleged paranormal activity in various locations such as homes, business and abandoned locations to determine the underlying causes or triggers of the activity. Our goal is to approach every investigation in a professional, spiritual, scientific and organized manner, including documentation of all E.M.F. and temperature readings and personal experiences throughout the entire investigation that our team members may have experienced. Our team comes from different backgrounds, but we all share a common goal in investigating paranormal phenomena that we take very seriously. We have had specialized training in the techniques of investigating the paranormal and continue to further our education to understand more of this evolving science and the technologies being used to study it. Using the various tools and methods that are available to us, we try to determine the type of haunting or activity that a client may be experiencing in their home or place of business. After every investigation is complete, we go through the process of analyzing the audio and video data. We will then meet with our clients and present our findings to them.

I offer driving and PI services. I am an all-around personal company for all your needs -- one-stop does it all.

We are a developing paranormal/anomalistic researching team. We are comprised of a psychic/medium, two technical specialists, and a veteran investigator. Combined, we have over 10 years of investigating experience, and we have recently decided to join together to start our own team. We observe anomalies and other paranormal activity as objectively as possible, and analyze the evidence collected to deem a location as being active or inactive. We will also explore methods of neutralizing any active location through a variety of channels.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
