Poured a patio with exposed aggregate. They were meticulous and flexible. Really looked at the site and designed steps that transition well with the adjacent deck. Great to work with!

Phoenix Builders provided excellent service from the start. The Bid was competative, the work was scheduled quickly and workmanship was top notch. I had a two car garage built, two decks and had a horse barn relocated on my property. I would definitely refer friends and family to use Phoenix Builders and I too will use them again as needed.

Bryan Trent calls himself a "Handyman"--however, while both handy, as well as a man with tremendous integrity and character, he exceeds this label. Bryan came to us on the heels of four different construction-remodelers, providing an excellent comparison pool. In short, Bryan Trent has now been finishing our 1200 square foot remodel, and we have hired him as our permanent Handyman. More specifically, allow me to describe his particular skills and abilities for others considering his employment. 1) His construction skills are outstanding--we have been most impressed with the mantel, completion of our deck, mirror trimout, and hardware mounting on decorative wooden panels he made; 2) He can and will do most anything asked of him. If he is not heavily skilled in an area, he finds resources that prep him to complete special projects, such as the installation of a screen door on double panel patio doors, raising our treadmill to proper height with a wooden block design, and trimming the kitchen with retro moulding, to name a few; 3) While not a licensed plumber, he has skills in this area as well. As stated, he can fix most anything; 4) He took his time to insure high caliber work, respected our property (and we are extremely particular about this!...e.g., he wears "booties" over his shoes when walking on our new carpet)--and our time. 5) He offers a very fair price. After numerous contractors and construction personnel, we would, and have, hired Bryan Trent as our "Handyman," but he is really a contractor, carpenter, plumber, and whatever meets your needs. While working for you, he will afford you respect, listen to your needs, communicate with you concerning your wants, and give you his very best effort. We could not be more pleased to have found and hired, Mr. Bryan Trent via Thumbtack. If you do the same, he will not dissapoint.

Lee is a great worker with excellent skills who has become a friend that we can really depend on. Terrific carpenter, both frame and finish, drywall, paint, you name it. Built us a terrific deck addition this summer all by himself! Very reliable, and always fair on his prices with us.

Couldn’t say enough good things about Brad and his company Eagle Eye. Brad comes from a military background and that combined with the civil engineer expertise. Makes for meticulous work and helluva work ethic. He hadn’t even been to our home, yet had 3D sketches from satellite images drawn to size. Estimates within a day. He built us an amazing deck. Had great time getting to know him and love the deck. Highly recommend. Photos are after main deck completion. He finished the rails later and cleaned everything up. It’s perfect.

These guys build a deck at the lake for me and did an amazing job. I knew what I wanted but I didn't have to define every detail and the decisions they made were excellent. I will continue to use Shields in the future.

Eric and his crew built a two-teir deck for our above ground pool. We weren't sure how we wanted to configure the deck, so he went over some ideas with us and it turned out great. It was well-built with quality materials. Eric was easy to communicate with, was timely and finished the job quickly. These guys know what they're doing and I will be referring them to friends and family. Exceptional work!

Matt has built a deck, painted several properties for me, and also has done all cabinetry and trim work for me for the last several years. His work is top notch. He refuses to cut corners and it shows in the final product. I wish I had more for him to do. His work makes me look good and is typically what gives me repeat customers. He's currently working on a set of alder cabinets and they are beautiful to say the least. Keep up the good work, looking forward to working with you.

Todd Rogers has done wonderful work for us almost 20 years ago he built a redwood deck along the front length of our trailer. I have never had one problem with it. It is as sturdy as the day it was built. He also at the same time built a above the ground deck it has rails all around for safety so nice to sit out in the spring and summer. It has xl steps going Dow so I don't fall or trip. Around five years or more a flood washed away our well house. We called Todd and he speedily came to our rescue. He built us much larger well house it is a walkin and so cute I think. It has lots of storage room for yard tools and even a small mower. Looks great as the day it was built. I would highly recommend Todd if you want something to last. Thanks Todd. Linda Webb

What an amazing experience this was. I was in a desperate position with relaxing Windows due to weather. I had previously hired two individuals who were no-shows, and another who never finished the job. Justin and Stacy arrived at the crack of dawn with all the equipment necessary to get it done. They worked late into the evening to complete this critically important task. They did extras, unasked, which was a real treat. They were such great workers, that I showed them the other things I need done in order to get my house ready to sell. They again arrive promptly, turned my deck from a raggedy looking old mess into a bright and shiny new looking asset to this property. They fixed my gate and restored the wood, painted what needed painting -- including 12 doors, three 15-light exterior doors -- for a ridiculously low price. These heroes of the UNhandy person are here again this morning opening up the chimney and attaching its cap. Justin and Stacy are a treasure. I have, possibly foolishly, never checked references before on the people who work on my house. This last disaster with the windows, which I began trying to get done in September, made me insist on a reference from Justin and Stacy. I spoke at length with a local businessman for whom Justin used to work. He had nothing but good to say about Justin and, in fact, was so impressed with this couple that he offered to correct himself anything that was not done well. It was a nice promise, but has proven to be totally unnecessary. I cannot recommend this company highly enough.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
