I contacted Rafael’s Lawncare for a quote to cut down one tree, remove it, and grind and remove the stump — and to quote grind and removal of another stump in my yard.
Jose responded immediately and took the conversation offline from the app to text message, which I was fine with. He quoted a price similar to other quotes that I had received for the same job, and his availability and ratings were slightly better so I awarded him the bid and we agreed upon a date and time for him to complete the work.
On the afternoon before, he contacted me to confirm the time (I confirmed). However on the morning of, he did not arrive on time. He contacted me 22 minutes after the agreed upon time to say that he was gathering his tools, and that he would arrive around 9:45 (original time was 9:00). He arrived at 9:53.
I greeted Jose and his wife and showed them to the back yard where the tree and additional stump were located. Jose immediately advised that he would be unable to remove the additional stump without additional equipment due to its size, but confirmed that he could handle the other part of the job. About 35 minutes later, I received a text stating that I should go back outside, as he was finished. I was shocked to find that Jose had only cut down the tree and had not removed the stump as my bid had very clearly stated. I was told again that he could not remove the stump without renting additional equipment, in spite of this stump being only about 4” in diameter. I asked how much and when he could come back to remove both stumps, and he ultimately admitted that he simply could not handle the large stump at all but would refer me to a friend with sufficient equipment to handle the job.
I ended up paying him the full price that we negotiated for tree+stump removal after he’d stated that he could not remove the first stump. For that price, I could have purchased a chainsaw and cut the tree down myself.
I am very disappointed that I was left with yet another job that I will need to bid out. However he was polite and responded promptly.
