Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Greg returned request in under 5 minutes and fit me in later in the day to fix my dryer outlet. I was moving into new house and previous owner used a terrible electrician who didn’t ground dryer and it caught the vent tube on fire. So once fire dept left- I called Greg and he did SUCH GREAT WORK, check several other areas the other electrician did and was such a gentleman and explained everything. He’s a pleasure to be around. Really personable, clean , knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend.

Searched for an electrician. Wasn’t sure what all I needed help with (way out of my realm!!) but Allan reassured me that he could do this and would be out on Sunday, even though it was a holiday. Quoted me a reasonable price (I reached out to other electricians that wanted to charge me $200+ for just a service fee call). Turned out my issue was a simple fix but Allan was prepared for potentially more if it was needed. I appreciate his prompt communication and phone call before coming to my home and then explaining what the issue was and how he fixed it. Will definitely be a go to for any repairs like this again!!!

Less than 24 hours after I sent the Thumbtack request for an electrician to repair my ceiling fan, it is fixed, an additional fan is installed and I’m considering some additional electrical work in my home. That’s how great my experience was! Thank you for your prompt professionalism!

If I could give ten stars I would. Johnny is professional, knowledgeable, affordable and most importantly... caring. His reviews speak volumes. I cannot recommend him enough. A true gentleman. Thank you for making time for us and for taking care of a mess that the prior " electrician/contractor " left for us to deal with. You're the best.

I had initially called for ceiling fan replacement. He did a wonderful job. Punctual. Very nice young man. So we decided to have him replace our indoor ceiling lights with new LEDs and have him install few more. He was again punctual and did a wonderful job. Lights and fans looking great. Very good electrician. Will definitely use him again.

My experience with the service Greg provided was awesome. The price was very affordable and he was very upfront with my problem and knew how to fix it. He's very knowledgeable with electrical wiring and doesn't mind explaining anything you have questions about. I also liked that there wasn't any outrageous additional fees other than the cost of the part and the fee to fix it. Greg is now my electrician for all future projects.

We threw a large project in an older house at Andrew and he took it like a champ! He worked for us over the course of several days which required some tight attic-space work and he never once complained or got frustrated. First off, we needed someone who could get to our job quickly as our project was held up until the electrical work could be done. I contacted Andrew on Saturday evening and he came out on a Sunday to give us a quote. He then offered to start that day! (He is a full-time electrician elsewhere and does side jobs on weekends/evenings and just happened to be free that day.) Andrew was very pleasant to work with. He was helpful with suggestions for our project. He was thorough and his price was extremely reasonable compared to other quoted hourly rates. We felt like he paid great attention to detail and was very careful with his work. We will certainly be hiring Andrew again for any future electrical needs!

I have hired a few people through Thumbtack and Griffin Electric was one of the best! I put out my request and within an hour I had a message from him to discuss my project. By the time we had everything worked out the next electrician messaged me - I had to thank him but I'd already set everything up with Griffin. Griffin got me in on their next availability which was the next week. They communicated with me again on the day of and let me know when they were headed to my house - arrived right on time (I was able to finish up picking up my groceries without having to hurry and worry he'd be sitting at my house! Whew!). He came in with all tools and materials and was in and out in under 30 minutes for my small outlet replacement. The area was cleaned-up and you could see he took care not to damage the surrounding wall. Perfect! When he finished the work I was able to shoot him a payment on paypal (so convenient!) and we've already discussed another project at my office that I'm working on.

I'm calling Greg 'Superman' 🦸🏿‍♂️🦸🏿‍♂️🦸🏿‍♂️🦸🏿‍♂️. He came in on an early morning to complete an unfinished job by another electrician we hired. He responds quickly to inquiries and text and promptly provides a very fair and accurate estimate. He estimated 2 hours worth of labor. He arrived and was gone by the 2 hour mark. He even vacuumed behind himself, which is very appreciated after the previous hire who left sharp wood chips behind on the floor in our children's room. From experience, you don't want to go the cheap route but Greg's prices are not inflated and the lowest I've come across. His professionalism and expertise are provided at an outstanding value. I will save his contact and hire him again. I am impressed. The only reason I did not provide a full 5 star rating is because he completed the job as requested but left a the electrical "box" visible in the middle of the wall instead of routing it up from the attic to make the TV mounting and cables invisible and seamless- which was the goal for me. I wish this would have been communicate before the hole was made in the wall. Now I have to paint over the box or try to hide it with a picture, which would be very weird next to a TV. All in all, I WILL HIRE HIM AGAIN. Thanks Greg.
