Patrick receives an 5 star rating from me for exceeding all of my expectations in the areas of customer service, quality of work offered, price, timeliness, and most importantly the finished product. Let me preface my review by stating that I have had extensive prior experience working with photographers in Portland over the years including my year as Mrs. Oregon. When I went to choose a photographer for my fifteen year old daughter's headshot, I had several top photographers in mind. After reviewing his work on his site and finding it to be comparable to the best photographers in PDX, I selected Patrick over the others who were more well known to me due in great part to his flexibility, responsiveness, and customer service skills. (sadly these skills are rarely seen among top notch photographers.) I took a risk with someone I wasn't as familiar with and was pleasantly surprised to have all my expectations exceeded. Let me explain. Personality/Skill....My daughter had no prior experience with posing other than school photos. Additionally, she was apprehensive about going into a studio to take her head shots. Patrick put her at ease, was able to coach her through the basics of posing, and even brought in his makeup artist to give her some tips. To see the quality of her posing improve so much so very quickly over the course of the single session was nothing short of amazing. Makeup/Hair..One thing I was looking for in a photographer was a skilled makeup/hair artist. Not really knowing what to expect, I hoped for the best. It isn't uncommon to get a cookie cutter makeup look for all clients from a makeup artist. I was extremely impressed with Ashley. To begin with she cared enough about her work to ask for photos in advance of my daughter as well as the look she was going for. The final result was nothing short of amazing. She was able to achieve two distinct looks that we provided with precision. She is a perfectionist. It is her personality, however, that was perfect for our needs. She is a young woman who relates to teens extremely well. She brought my daughter out of her shell and put her at ease. I highly recommend paying extra to use her to do your makeup. It was money well spent as she created the foundation of the look that Patrick was able to capture very artistically. Price/Value..The photos are stunning. I didn't want a senior portrait photo being marketed as a headshot. Patrick really knows the local industry and what they are looking for in the various niche markets. We have a great assortment of photos reasonably priced. In my opinion, a photographer who is very skilled will charge a reasonable photo session fee and then charge for each photo selected individually. Don't get sucked into packages as you may end up with only one or two good shots while paying for many mediocre ones. Patrick is confident enough that he will get enough great must have shots that you will love that he will end up making the same or more money from me than a photographer who mandates a package. He doesn't need to force clients into packages. I literally love dozens of the final photos. When all is said and done, I will have paid less than I would have for a package with no assurance of quality. Customer Service..In the end the customer service is the most important part. Patrick was responsive to my initial inquiry and all follow up questions. The proofs were done remarkably fast. I will be scheduling a follow up session to pay for my final selections. He so cared about my daughter's experience, however, that he let her have a few of her favorite shots right away. That is something you would never see from a large photo studio. In short, you can't go wrong with Patrick.

It was great working with the photographers. We were just supposed to have one photographer, but we ended up with two, so more photos! It was an outdoor wedding and the weather didn't fully cooperate; the photographers did a good job working with the elements and caught some nice moments.

Ryan is awesome. He's personable, friendly and professional. Just tell him your ideas and he takes it up a notch. Ryan did our family photos and we just get tons of compliments. We never imagined they'd really turn out so well. He over delivered by far. I then hired Ryan to do some photography for our business and the end result was equally as exceptional. We did product photos, business headshots and some shots of the office spaces and made our project turn out miles better than using typical stock photography. We couldn't recommend anyone higher than Ryan.

It was a pleasure working with Kelvin on my daughter's senior pictures. He is very easy-going and was able to curb her initial panic and get here to enjoy herself. The photos turned our beautiful - so hard to choose my favorite. I would definitely recommend him to anyone needing a great photographer. My daughter says that Kelvin "is nice and fun to work with. He had some great ideas and the pics came out amazing."

Juan was great to work with. We had a small courthouse wedding with a five minute ceremony, but we wanted to get dressed up and a professional photographer anyway. We had a limited budget, and other photographers came in with lower offers, but we felt more comfortable that Juan would help us with great photographs that we could share with all of the friends and family that couldn't be at the actual ceremony. Juan was on time, excited for us while also being professional, and was able to cater to special requests. Even though we were a small wedding, we felt that Juan gave us the same attention as if we were throwing a huge bash, and we were thrilled with the quality of the photos and the timeliness of his delivery.

Ethan was very responsive and clear in our communications leading up to the photo shoot. He came early to scope the location and made everyone feel calm and he took control without it being noticed. He worked well with all our family members and was open to whatever we wanted to shoot. I am a photographer and highly recommend Ethan

Chris at Rip City Photography has helped take our Airbnb management company to The Next Level with his keen eye for detail and technical prowess behind the lens. We’ve been fortunate enough to work with him on several projects this year, and he’s extremely professional, delivering consistent, on-time results every time. A good communicator, Chris ensures he understands our requirements before starting each project; it feels so good to know he’s got it handled, and there’s always excited expectation to see the photos when he’s done with post-production. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fantastic real estate photographer.

Adam was wonderful to work with. He helped to put our staff at ease and captured some very professional images. He even offered to come and re-shoot any that we needed without charging us extra. The images are exactly what we were looking for. He is both prompt and extremely reasonable. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced photographer. We will be using him going forward.

Rachel is so easy to work with. She is the perfect photographer for family portraits. We had two babies in our portrait and she has a knack for getting that perfect shot! She makes you feel very comfortable and that translates to a photo that really captures the moment. I would work with her again!

I have worked with many professional photographers over the years and Kerry is not only the most talented, but he is also just a really nice person and super easy to work with. He is an absolute perfectionist without being stuffy. Although he is full of great ideas, he was also very attentive and patient while i explained to him what i wanted. I would highly recommend Kerry to anybody who wants to have a high quality photographer at a very reasonable price for what you get.

Sarah Haimes has truly been a dream to work with. I started booking her travel dates and can't be even more thankful for having her be the one to document very precious moments of my life. She is primarily a wedding photographer, but OMG you know it's talent that no matter the time of day, or the location, or the genre of portraiture. Because Shuttergram Photography PREFORMS. That is the true beauty of working with a professional! Shuttergram Photography stands out from other photographers in the industry because of her unique eye and artistic approach to all sessions. She has strong work with single subjects all the way to group photos for families or wedding portraits. But what really gets me is her artistic editing and knowing how to highlight your best features that make you feel like a million bucks. I'm a proud client and supporter of Shuttergram Photography. And I've been contemplating on a vow renewal just so I can get wedding portraits with her artistic vision!

What a great experience! Daniel was a patient and professional photographer that worked well with my 4 month old. He was also very open to shot ideas while bringing his own great ideas to the table. I look forward to having him capture future moments of my little one. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

Hi there - I would like a quote for a photoshoot of a political candidate in several different locations. We're hoping to do a half day all at once and hit several places in the Beaverton/Washington County area. We're thinking a group of seniors in one location, some kids in another, and a small business. Possibly one more. How much would you charge for something like that? We need lots of photos to use on mail, social media, etc. Thanks so much, Evyn
