It is a big decision to join a Martial Arts school. The head instructor is everything. Sifu Cropper and the other students made us feel welcome. We love our Kajukenbo because there are 5 arts in one. Great job and thank you for teaching our children self defense.
Where to even begin? Krav Maga has proven to be one of the most effective and easiest to learn forms of self defense ever devised. Used by the Israeli Defense Force and numerous law enforcement agencies worldwide, it constantly undergoes review from its highest ranks to ensure the system stays relevant to the environments in which it's practiced. That said, I've been a student for a couple of years and have had an amazing experience from day 1. Mark Blake co-owns the school and teaches along with an amazing team of instructors. When I first started taking classes I was 48 pounds overweight and needed a fitness regimen that would keep me engaged and interested. My first class was *so* physically challenging I actually had to pick myself up by the bootstraps to go back. But within a month I'd already dropped 10 pounds and was able to make it through a rigorous hour of class without stopping. The classes are so fun that most of the time I'm barely aware I'm "working out" so I never get bored. This is a highly effective form of self defense and fitness and I would recommend it for men and women just about any age. The first class is free too!
My girlfriend and I are both relatively new to firearms. Both of us had been recreational shooting with friends twice, but never received any proper training. We recently decided we wanted to buy a gun for home defense and for recreational shooting. However, we first wanted to get adequate training for safety reasons, and also wanted some experience handling different firearms to help us make our decision about what to get. Furthermore, I would like to note that due to my work schedule, my girlfriend is often home alone at night while I’m at work, and we both believe that if anything ever happened, it would be best if she had training she could fall back on rather than having to figure out what to do in the moment. Our training with Yonty turned out to not only be incredibly valuable but also a lot of fun. Yonty’s class was very thorough and covered operating, aiming, and firing of different types of firearms as well as proper stance, concealment, and threat response tactics. I would say my favorite part of the course though, and the most valuable was the live fire exercises/drills that Yonty had us do. Although the course was short, I now feel like I would know how to respond and how to function in most threat situations. If you are new to firearms, or are even an experienced shooter who is looking for more training, I would highly recommend one of Yonty’s classes. He is thorough, safety conscious, has expert knowledge on all topics relating to firearms, defense tactics, and security, and is also great at teaching and explaining. I think anyone who takes his courses will feel they walked away with more knowledge, confidence, and instinct when it comes to using a firearm.
Portland Shotokan is one of the finest and most traditional martial arts schools in the greater Portland area. Bettina Sensei and her husband are both dedicated to teaching the art of Shotokan karate while instilling self-discipline, respect, and honor in each and every student that enters their Dojo. I highly recommend that you visit their school, ask questions and take a class or two. Be ready to enjoy a great workout, learn to defend yourself, and be immersed in one of the finest martial arts culture the world has to offer.
Janna is awesome! Her women's boxing class is fun, affordable, informative and offers a great workout! Not only is Janna a great coach, but she also goes out her way to offer her expertise on questions I have about nutrition and strength training. So glad I found Phoenix Functional Fitness!
JT is a great trainer. He's very motivating and holds you accountable which is something I need. He is firm but compassionate. I would definitely recommend him. He can handle any type of person, whether you're just starting out or a seasoned worker-outer... And any personality because I generally cuss him up one side and down the other and he's ok with that. :)
Owner, Chris Denison, is an exceptional human being in addition to an accomplished personal trainer, self defense instructor, and arms instructor. He has a vast understanding of his field and genuinely cares about his clients' success. Even more rare is his accessibility, communication, and follow-through - he is exactly who he represents himself to be and, because of that, he has my highest recommendation.
I took the self defense class from Mitchell and now feel more confident than perhaps I should. But I would still be going myself if I didn't have personal problems. However, I was so impressed with this class and the instructor that I decided to sign my kids (8 and 10) up and they have been going now for more than six months and not only do they love it, but I love how I am able to integrate pieces of class into our daily lives to smooth some areas. And I now have confidence that my children will be able to protect themselves from most who mean them harm, or at least be able to talk about it. The only thing I must practice patience about is that Mitch can sometimes be easily distracted and go in a different direction than expected, but it is still generally informative. I would and do recommend Mitchell Pennell"s self defense class for any- and everyone.
Head instructor is Fabiano Scherner, multiple time world champion Brasilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. Awesome team, has a large number of blue, purple, brown and black belts that left other gyms to train there. Everyone super friendly and really into helping out beginners. Fun place to workout. Also it is in the same building as a weight lifting gym that gives a huge discount
I've known this man for decades... Class act!! Jim Thomas
We were looking for a dojo for our daughter to continue her karate training when I found Seishinkan Karate On Main. Much to my surprise Sensei Ellis answered the phone and spent time to talk with me about his dojo, asked about our daughter, and set up an appointment right away for us to come in and meet. After our meeting we signed up for a 2 month trial, our daughter knew after the first week she wanted to join. Sensei Ellis goes out of his way to acknowledge each student each day they come in to train. It is obvious to me that Sensei Ellis not only enjoys what he is shares with his students, he enjoys his students.
Allow me to be the first to recommend Guru Angie! I always find her training sessions to be fun and informative. She's very patient and presents the material in an easy to understand, step by step manner that doesn't overwhelm. Her self defense techniques are easy to learn but very effective against larger and stronger opponents.

I have studied martial arts for 16 years. I have competed in over 20 tournaments including taking first place in the nationals. I have my black belt in karate and have practiced hapkido, judo and aikido. I have taught karate and self-defense. My philosophy is teaching self-defense in a way that is simple. Awareness , confidence, keeping ones body and mind strong and disciplined, as well as physical techniques that one can remember when in a frightening situation . I am passionate about a healthy diet , proper weight , exercise which includes cardio and weight training . I have 38 years of expereince. I am a trainer who pushes . Form is an absolute . I am careful to not over train and feel that muscles and " fat " respond well to variety . It's more fun and keeps up the desire to keep going. Self defense for women is an option . I am experienced in both .

As a woman, I understand the fears and safety issues that all women face! I have studied the best techniques and have come up with a system which empowers any woman, no matter age, size, or shape. My system features the three Ps of personal safety as follows: * Prevention--what you can do in advance to prevent a crime or get out of danger quicker * Perception--awareness training and what you can do to change how an attacker sees you * Power--not just using your personal body weapons that you carry with you daily but your mind and the passion for the people you care about We provide self-defense training and seminars for women taught by a woman!
