Introduction: HEY CHARLIE CREATIVE is a one-woman graphic design studio in Bend, Oregon. Founder Lana Bannow’s focus is on carefully mastered design with a balance of functionality, purpose, and personality. The studio brings life to small businesses and brands by clarifying their purpose and providing a fresh direction. But quality design doesn’t stand alone. Partnership is required, and meaningful relationships are a common outcome. LANA BANNOW, founder and designer, spent the first three years of her career in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a graphic design intern for a non-profit Community Development Financial Institution, a firm that provides financing and practical business training to business owners that don’t qualify for traditional bank loans. After Michigan, Lana moved across the country to Oregon to work as an in-house designer for a burgeoning and innovative natural foods distributor. The relationships she built during her first two years of living and working in Oregon enabled her to take the leap into starting her own business. She’s now able to work with a broader range of industries and has total freedom over projects and clients. When she’s not designing with her main sidekick, Charlie the cat, she’s outside enjoying all Central Oregon has to offer. Whether she is exploring new trails, mountain biking, skiing, paddling, or climbing, Lana is always blending outdoor recreation into her day-to-day life. It’s a mix of creativity, energy, and passion that allows Lana to pack 38 hours worth of work and play into each day. Oh, and coffee. Ready to see what we can create together?

Lana is one of the best graphic designers that Ive had the chance to work with. I have contracted her under 2 companies, both with completely different product lines and services and she has performed at the highest level! Lana communicates in a way that even someone like myself can understand. Through my awful and sometimes vague description of what I would like accomplished, she produces logos, designs and images well above my standards. Her interpersonal skills coupled with her amazing design and communication makes for one of the best local designers in town! I want to personally say Thank You for all your great work! I've been working with Lana for at least 2 years (and still do today) and it's been an excellent experience all the way around. Lana designs our weekly email promotions, online homepage billboards and portals, infographics, and social squares. Pros: - Listens and communicates well. Listed first because you can have the most ingenious person working on your project, but if they don't listen to what you want and need, how do we get to the finish line? - Stays on top of projects, timelines and deadlines. Quick turnaround. Work is labeled well. Thoughtful questions asked through the design process. - Open to creative ideas and suggestions on a project, but not afraid to toss out alternatives. If I don't take her up on these, she doesn't go all 'wounded puppy' on me. - Happily works with my ideas for a creative piece, and can just as easily generate fresh ideas without direction. - Understands the general look and feel we're going for, and helps us stay within cohesive design parameters (i.e.: won't create something that radically deviates from our general look simply because it's the newest design craze). - Can-do attitude, sunny personality, hard worker. It's that good Midwestern work ethic we don't see enough of these days. Cons: - I wish I worked in an office with her, since she's a breath of fresh air to have around.

Above and beyond the normal graphic designer! I have dealt with others that seem to be more interested in paying off their student loans, than giving quality service. Lana is a professional in the purest sense of the word!

I've been working with Lana since she was in college. She started as an intern at Northern Initiatives and we setup a retainer contract with her after she graduated. Lana recently helped us develop a new design for our website, email marketing and print materials. She is also very responsive. Always meets her deadlines and communicates well. We never had to email and ask her the status of a project.

How did you get started doing this type of work?
It's a funny story actually! In high school, I was with my mother browsing wine at our local grocery store (for her of course). She was looking to purchase wine for an upcoming dinner party, but wasn't actually much of a wine drinker herself. I watched as she examined all the labels and names, finally making her choice. She selected an elegant, black label that looked fancy. My mind was instantly hooked. Why did she select that wine without knowing the taste? What makes that label feel fancy? Why did that designer chose those fonts and colors? The rest is history. ....And you can imagine what it's like when I try to pick out wine today!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Sometimes, the mere thought process can take longer than the actually designing. This is where estimating time can be tricky, because it can take a few hours to plan/sketch out design ideas, before you actually get a physical product. On the other hand, it's the idea that makes a beautiful design come to life!
