Stacey's work was clutch recently when I accidentally destroyed a sprinkler head in my front yard. Much to my dismay when I dug down to replace it I realized a near by tree had wrapped its several inch thick roots around the head itself. I called in reinforcements and Stacey arrived armed with a saw, and some grit to excavate the sprinkler. He did a fast and thorough job of wrenching out the root from hell, even teaching me a little bit about the system along the way. Would highly recommend!

The work (tree removal) could be not done for several weeks after the bid. That was fine. They were an amazing two-man crew that worked very hard for three or four hours. After they finished the job you would never have know they had been here (except I had a much better view without the old, dying tree). I will definite use them again. The price was very reasonable and the communication with Amy was excellent. I would definitely recommend them as their company a five-star operation. Bill

Joe was very responsive. I've worked with other tree removal folks who weren't responsive at all, but Joe was great. When he experienced machine trouble that forced him to change his schedule, he let me know right away and offered to come out on a Sunday at no extra charge. He did good work and I would definitely hire him again. Thanks Joe!

While Jose showed up at my house on the wrong day, I allowed him to plant my trees anyway and he did a great job. I would hire him again in the future as well as recommend him to others. He is very hard working and planted my trees the way I asked. 👍

Dan was reasonable priced next to the competition. I had sod, yard cleanup, bark, tree trimming and plant relocation done. It was done quickly, and professionally. The crew moved two huge elderberry bushes without damaging them or the house. I was really hoping to save them and I'm sure they will do well in their new spot. The yard looks great. There was some miscommunication regarding one part of the project. Dan did his best to rectify.

Kevin was here promptly and performed all of the quoted duties including cleaning our gutters, flushing the downspouts, scrubbing and treating the roof for moss, and removing a large dead limb from high up in a tree. He cleaned everything up nicely. His price was competitive. We will be calling Kevin in the future to do our general yard maintenance.

I own rental properties in PDX and have used a number of tree trimming services over the years. Green Scape Landscaping is the best and most responsive company I have used to date. The owner, Ed Harris, is very detail oriented and is very concerned that he listens to what the customer wants, and gives the customer satisfaction. He is knowledgeable and will offer professional advice when warranted, but will defer to your wishes so long as you understand what it is you are asking for. Ed remains in communication with you throughout the process. He follows up, also. His crew is fast, thorough, cheerful, and prompt. They are careful to be non-disruptive (especially important to me because of tenants). I will use them again and I recommend them to anyone who needs tree service. I would further infer that their other services (scheduled maintenance, etc.) are equally professional.

After agreeing to the price I hired PDX Tree Service to remove a tree that was to close to my house for me to deal with. They arrived on time and went to work, it didn't take long before the tree was on the ground. Good job guys.

Roberto and his partner did a great job of removing a tree in my backyard. They were able to remove the stump to several inches below the ground so that a stump grinder was not necessary. He checked with me throughout the job process to make sure they were doing exactly what I wanted done. Roberto left the site so tidy that you couldn’t even tell a tree had been there. I would definitely use his service again.

I've never hired a person to take down a tree before, and I hit the jackpot with Diego. It was hard to watch a tree that was over 40 years old go, but each step of taking it down was professional, neat, and a lot of consideration for the tree. I highly recommend Diego and his crew.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
