When I hired Sharon Hocking to come in and do a complete Interior Design of our Living and Dinning Rooms I had no idea just how wonderful this experience would be. Sharon was excellent to work with and listened to all of my concerns, ideas and suggestions. She was very communicative and prompt when we would set up meetings. Her attention to detail is beyond anything else I could have done on my own. Because I still work full time Sharon was able to do all of the leg work and then some. The next time I get ready to do some more decorating in my home Sharon will be the first and only Interior Designer that I will hire.

As soon as he saw it, John had ideas for replacing our carport with a better engineered and more attractive design. It was weighing on the house roof and there was leaking over the entry. He was prompt, direct and informative, and supplied a schedule. His workers were pleasant and left things neat, removing old nails from the driveway every day. Any delays came with an explanation. The end result is a vast improvement, with fewer posts and a higher ceiling

We couldn’t have dreamed of a better experience with Tim and Matt at New Legacy Construction. We purchased a fixer upper several years ago on our dream property and were looking for a contractor to help us tell a story and create a beautiful and functional remodel that would fit within our budget. The house had potential but lacked character and functionality. After meeting with several contractors and not being able to come up with a design we loved, we were at a standstill. After meeting with Tim at New Legacy Construction we were blown away by their creative vision for design options and computer graphic presentation. From start to finish this was an amazing experience. They delivered everything they said they would and more. They were honest, kind and respectful. It was clear that they care deeply about their craftsmanship and every single detail that goes into a project. We loved how they involved us in the whole process. Matt even let my small kids help him with little projects here and there, so they felt like they helped rebuild their own home right alongside him. Our bathroom remodel is only the beginning of our working relationship with them. We can’t wait to have them come back for more spaces and we would never consider using anyone else to do the work. We would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for a talented and honest contractor.

I have worked with Jen for over 10 years. She has designed, sewed and installed blinds, curtains, and cushions for me. She has helped me with projects that were more complex such as creating a sunbrella cover for a tennis shed and designing a window cover for a very large and strangely shaped bay window. She is creative, detail oriented, and responsive to my needs and style. She finishes her jobs on time, on budget and is reasonably priced. She has a great eye for style and color. And the final product is always beautifully done. I love working with Jen and I love the work that she does!

I feel so fortunate to work with Tamauflage for my design and plant curation needs. Her attention to detail, space, aesthetics, texture, and my personality has made my home feel more like the home I've always dreamed of living in. There's no way I could have created such an inviting space on my own. At this point, I share an idea with her and then give her total creative license to implement the design. She asks great clarifying questions along the way, but ultimately, I trust her recommendations - she always come through. Five stars.

Before contacting Design Allure my family had lived in our home for 9 years, during initial construction all of the rooms were revamped with cabinets/counters/trim but the home theater room and bathroom were to be the main entertaining part of our home. As an engineer with a young family such big plans for the space were never completed. The space has so much opportunity but I found it difficult to put a vision of the space into motion. Design Allure came in and photographed/ measured the space, met with me on what important key parts of the room I wanted to stay the same and quickly picked up on the style I was looking for (it turned out to be called transitional). Without changing thestructural floorplan, Irene was able to open up the space and make it more inviting then I could have ever imagined. Thanks Design Allure! I now have the inspiration and a cohesive virtual model that I can work with to begin building my dream theater.

Christina has helped us on two different occasions. She helped us design our basement remodel as well as an outdoor fire pit area. Both times she listened to our ideas/desires and created a few different designs to give us multiple ideas. She's great to work with and will certainly be a part of any future home projects!

Pangaea provided excellent and creative designs for some difficult spaces in our new home, including kitchen, master bedroom and living room. The results were outstanding, and we receive nothing but compliments from folks who visit our home. She also operates on a fixed-fee model for her time, which made the design costs predictable.

Estelaz Interior Designed redecorated my kitchen, living and dining room. I consider myself skeptical and hard to please as I’m myself a perfectionist however, after sitting with her for the first 15 minutes I recognized she knew what she was doing to the point that I trusted her enough to pick the curtains for the dining room! It seemed she understood exactly what we liked! Gentle, not pushy at all and moreover, very patient and calm to deal with my wife and I who are very hard to arrive to a middle point without fussing when it’s about moving things around the house. Ivonne did not give up on us, but rather knew how to use and combine our different approaches, rapidly grasping on our family style and functionality needs to create the perfect climate for our home. One of her first questions was, “how do you want to feel when you step in to the kitchen”, I never thought feelings would have such an important account in decoration. Very professional, great touch and impeccable finish. I only have good things to say about Estelaz Interior Design work.

It was a pleasure working with Zach! I was looking to upgrade my fireplace, mantle. I had a vision for the space to include raw wood, tile and floating shelves. I met with Zach and described my desire for the space. He presented me with multiple sketches within a few days to a week. I chose what I liked from a few sketches and Zach was able to design a great focus wall for my space. I would highly recommend Zach Freund. He was very professional, caring. His creativity and knowledge were plentiful.

Michelle helped create the perfect backyard space for us. We had an idea of what we wanted but not a good vision of how to transform what existed into what we wanted. In the design process Michelle helped us to think more broadly and to help the indiviual ideas we had flow into a congruent space. She listened to our ideas, made suggestions, added her own experience and developed a plan that we became very excited about. Then, as the project progressed, Michelle was there interacting with the landscapers and builders to make sure the plan was followed and that good decisions were made when unforeseen circumstances arose. Mostly I couldn't be there when the work was happening but I had great confidence that Michelle would be there when necessary to make knowledgeable suggestions and decisions that would insure a great outcome. We couldn't be happier with our new outdoor space and our decision to work Michelle. I would highly recommend her services for if you have high expectations for professionalism and for the final outcome of your project. Michelle has the experience, skills, and vision to make sure it happens for you. We are so grateful for what she did for us.

    About

In 2007, I graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and two years later, I earned my AKBD (Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer) certificate through the National Kitchen and Bath Association. I have worked the full spectrum of design including at several design/build firms on high end kitchen/baths and whole house remodels to smaller family-run construction companies with a focus on work where budget is paramount. In this industry, I have found that building relationships, networking with vendors, and focusing on quality long-term partners can generate the best bridges for life. My passion for interior design started when I was young, helping my uncle, a local contractor/home builder on job sites, analyzing the architectural plans, visiting product showrooms, and assisting with material choices. I loved the client interaction and creative expression interior design allowed. Plus, what a fun career! Working with homeowners to create beautiful interiors where they can feel comfortable and joyful is an exhilarating challenge I look forward to every day. My approach to design involves a very collaborative open communication between designer and client. To truly design the space, I need to know a few things about how you live. For example, how many people will be living in the home, how many pets, and low maintenance or green material preferences. As a designer, I can envision how simple, out-of-the-box solutions to problems in our environments can truly change the functionality of how we live. My personal style is transitional, however, I spend a lot of time upfront listening to my client's needs and wants before evaluating what style would be the best fit their lifestyle. I am very energized and encouraged for a great year after attending the 2014 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and International Builders Show (IBS) in Vegas and eager to work on your project! Let me know how I can help you with your home! Key interior design tasks are as follows: * In-home client consultations * Auto CAD floor plans, elevations and renders * Putting together color palettes * Specifying materials and writing construction documents * Space layout and 20/20 cabinetry design * Furniture and window treatment selections * Individualized project budgeting and pricing * Design retainer payment structure

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
