I've worked with a dozen contractors over the last year on an extensive home remodel and the best experience I've had, by far, has been with Zeev. His motivation is 100% to create a finished product that I will be proud of and he did so in the process of executing an extremely complex electrical plan. I could not recommend Zeev highly enough.

I was very satisfied with the knowledge and professionalism that Errin and his crew brought to our yard. They worked hard all day to remove "erosion control", till, amend the soil, grade, and install sod and a gravel shed pad to my specifications. I went from having a back yard of mud to a place where my kids can play, and my dogs come in without mud all over their feet! I'm happy to begin planting and doing the "fun" work in my garden now that Key Concepts did the heavy lifting for me. After getting quotes from several landscaping companies, Key Concepts did the best job for the price. I will be recommending them to all my neighbors moving into their new homes with mud for a backyard!

My husband & I just moved to the PNW two months ago and do not know any contractors for painting. Our house needed entire interior painted. My niece told me about Thumbtack so I checked it out. Fernando Damas, owner, called immediately. He is so pleasant to talk to. He came to our home within a day or two. He emailed our quote to us the next day. His painters, Jose & Manuel are awesome. Our interior looks fabulous. They were punctual every day and worked some days until 7:30pm. We've had contactors before that would spend a lot of time on their cell phones. Not Jose or Manuel. We were extremely happy with them and especially the beautiful job they did. We recommend Damas Painting without any reservation. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed!

Creekscape Design executed a top-notch renovation job on our backyard deck/patio. We were highly impressed with the owner Juan, who offered us excellent customer service, communication and follow-through with our project from beginning to end! We were especially impressed with how we gave him a few inspiration images and he gave us excellent design feedback and even detailed CAD sketches; helping us to achieve what we wanted within our budget limitations. His recommendations were excellent and he didn't flinch when we had unexpected issues come up within the job. Creekscape seriously puts customer satisfaction first and we were so happy with the work, the crew and the results. If you have a backyard renovation in mind, whether it be replacing a deck, putting in a hardscape patio, or landscaping the backyard...don't hesitate to call Juan at Creekscape Design. They did seriously excellent work!

I could not be happier with the job Rise Solutions did on installing my new sod. They were professional, easy to talk to and work with, efficient, knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I also appreciate that their company is environmentally conscious, not using any harmful chemicals that could potentially harm pets. I would highly recommend hiring Rise Solutions for your next landscaping project!

Wonderful results. Joe was late the first day but let me know that and still finished the first day's work. Not very many contractors let you know when they will be late. He was helpful and courteous. Came early the next day to complete the process.

As a senior divorced woman it is hard to find a landscaper or contractor who is respectful and fair. Roberto’s landscape and maintenance is fairly priced, fast but pay close attention to detail, and extremely professional with the respectful conversations amongst each other without using curse words in every sentence. I at no time felt uneasy, being taken advantage of, or that I couldn’t afford their services. The crew works well together, are kind, and walked me through the whole job at the end. I have nothing but great praise and gratitude for them. Amanda Witter

We have been waiting for 3 weeks to get pad pouredfrom other contractors I contacted Makaia and he responded and poured my pad in the same week. He was a very professional guy. He showed up when he said he was going to and done a excellent job on our concrete patio that we had poured. The price was very reasonable and I would recommend him and if I need more work done in the future I will go with his team. Happy customer in Ridgfield!!!!

We had an excellent experience with Chimcare a few years ago and used them again for this chimney cleaning and inspection. Ryan did a great job and was very professional. We appreciate that he was prompt and held to the appointment time--something that most contractors never do. This service was done in Vancouver, WA.

Jesus is a great contractor to work with, and I will recommend him to friends. He did everything right, from the estimate to the finished work. The intial contact, the estimate, the communication, the expectation, the delivery, and the final product were all excellent, if there were 6 stars, I'd give him another one.

Absolutely outstanding. Shawn Ladd sets the standard for contracting. Extraordinarily pleasant to work with. Top quality crew, outstanding communication, and job management. Extremely competitive pricing, was low or near low bid, but was way more qualified. Worked together perfectly with the interior designer and other contractors on the site. Ladd Masonry refaced a living room fireplace with real dry-stacked stone and added a hearth and mantle. Completely transformed the mid-century modern home, added ten times the price to the value of the home. Installer was an artist basically, extremely tedious detailed stone by stone work. It was all completed expeditiously and beautifully. If you have a quality project, and want and can afford quality workmanship this is it. You need to plan ahead and hire Shawn right away - because this top quality contractors's schedule will fill up very fast.

I hired chimney rescue to repair a chimney on my 1932 home that had a bricks flying off in the last wind storm. I priced other contractors and Chimney Rescue gave me the best price and the quickest turnaround. The cherry on top was that they had brick in stock that matched the existing brick EXACTLY -- and they even added pigment to the grout to match the existing weathered grout. Beautiful job -- I highly recommend these guys.

It was great working with Oscar. He communicated with me, showed up when he said would, did good efficient work, and cleaned up before he left. Seems basic, right? So many contractors don't and it's very refreshing to find someone who operated so professionally.

We are delighted with our new paver patio and wide steps. Paul and his crew at Rock Creek Hardscapes did a beautiful job. Also, every step of working with Paul was great. He showed up when he said he would, finished before he said he would, and charged what he said he would. We thought it was a fantastic value and are completely satisfied in every way. - Mike and Teague Sanders

We agreed that he would pick up the leaves and mow the lawn. That's all we wanted done, and he was great. Our yard looks so much better. I will hire him again when we need work done. He was reliable and gave me a timeline for when he could do the work. I like the fact that he communicated.

We moved into a house rental and the yard was a mess. Land Pro LLC and several others were advised by Angie's List and Home Advisors. A couple of others made appointments to come out and give me an estimate, another kept cancelling. Land Pro LLC was on time, gave budget manageable estimates and was prompt and professional. After choosing them to do the job, they arrived on time, did a fantastic job in a minimum amount of time. I am most pleased. I will definitely recommend them to anyone who needs lawn maintenance.

We bought a new home and wanted to extend our concrete patio. James came out and looked at our patio, gave us a detailed, professional proposal (and the best pricing). He even explained what to be careful if we decide to hire a different contractor. After we decided to go with him, James and his crew came and did a very professional job, including cleaning up. We are very happy and would definitely recommend James and his company!

I have been buying distressed property to flip and/or to keep for over 20 years. I am retired now and do most of the work myself but once in awhile I hire help to speed things up. I am a perfectionist and all my rentals are the best buildings in their neighborhoods. It's hard to find contractors that have the necessary skills and a sense of pride in the work they do. They just want to rush in, slap it together, get paid and move on. That's why it was refreshing to meet Ivan. He came recommended and has skills in many areas. I worked out a deal where he is going to help me build a 340ft fence around a duplex I own. Of course being me this is not just any ordinary fence. It is on uneven ground and has a wavy top with a custom board pattern. The most difficult section is a 120ft straight stretch on a treed slope. He built that section straight as an arrow better than I could have done myself and that's saying a lot. I am not an easy person to please when it comes to construction projects. Most contractors I talk to don't qualify and the ones that have the skills are in high demand and charge accordingly so I can't justify them. With Ivan the quality is exceptional, he always arrives on time which in itself is rare in this business. To me he gave a great quote for the work he is doing and he is a great listener so I get what I actually want. I am looking forward to having him help me with other aspects of the remodeling (sheet rocking, hardwood flooring, painting, hanging doors, etc.) and fixing the next property I'll buy. You won't regret having him give you a competitive quote and deliver a fabulous end result.

Chuck tiled two bathrooms for us and did a wonderful job. I went with him over other contractors because he sent me an email estimate listing in detail exactly what was included in the price so there were no surprises later on. He kept me updated on his progress as he was working, and the end result was beautiful. I will definitely hire him again in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
