One star is for his effort and *some* cleaning that was completed. One star is for being available last minute and being a generally nice person.
I couldn’t in good conscience leave a positive review otherwise.
When he was done cleaning, he asked if I wanted to look everything over, but I said “no” because it was such a standard cleaning I didn’t think I needed to. I paid him and even tipped almost 30% because he charged a fair price ($120), was available last minute, and it’s the holidays.
Just before he was leaving, I happened to catch that there was a feather on the floor where I had seen it before he arrived. I pointed it out and he said he realized he hadn’t done that area. He offered to clean it, and I agreed.
While he was getting his cleaning stuff to finish that, I looked around further and noticed a lot more was left to clean or had been poorly done — the floor was still dirty, the sink wasn’t touched, appliances weren’t wiped, side tables weren’t dusted, etc.
After I pointed this out to him he said he would address all my concerns. I heard him continue working for about another 20 mins and then he just left without saying anything (I was in an upstairs room).
I looked at our kitchen and it was still a mess. We (my husband and I) each had to spend about 30 mins cleaning after he left (see photos of how he left it even after we pointed things out to him — food grime still in sink, trash can wet with wet food on it, dishwasher/oven door not wiped, plenty of food crumbs in the corner, and more).
Later, we took a closer look at the bathroom and the mirror wasn’t wiped well, shelves weren’t dusted, there was hair everywhere in the tub (I don’t know where the hair came from, because I had given it a light cleaning the night before after I took a bath).
We reached out with a text to let him know we were still unhappy and provided reasons why, but no response.
I don’t think he intended to do a poor job. Maybe a little spacey or forgetful?
For context of why we hired him and how our home cleanings usually go:
We hired Jose last minute after 2 other cleaners cancelled on us last minute. Although we usually have a regular cleaner, she was gone for the holidays. It usually takes her 3 hours to complete a pretty thorough cleaning (blinds, fixtures, sparkling finish, dusting everything, etc). We told Jose we just needed a routine cleaning but not to dust a full bookshelf and our 2 offices (just vacuum the offices). Aside from that, we wanted a standard cleaning which should take less than 3 hours since we have our home cleaned regularly and have a minimalist home. It took him 3.5 hours and then we each clean about 30 mins ourselves. It does not take 4.5 hours of labor for a very basic clean of this home.
This added such a level of stress to our day right before we’re about to leave for holidays and hope he takes these things into consideration for future customers.

This was a last-minute booking in a home I had never cleaned before, with a strict time limit requested. For first-time clients, I typically recommend a deep clean to establish a baseline, as every home requires a different approach. In this case, the scope of work was limited by time rather than results.
I offered a walkthrough at the end of the appointment so any concerns could be addressed immediately. While I did my best within the time available, I understand that expectations were not aligned.
My goal is always to provide quality work, and I’ve since updated my booking policies to ensure first-time cleans are never rushed and expectations are clear for all clients.
