Overall Impression of Jake Standley: -A fast turn-around in producing design and illustration work. -A keen sense for branding. -A quick-study getting in step with a new project. -An exceptional illustrator. The Job, Portland, OR: To create an antique-looking, inviting, instructional piece of packaging for a multi-tool pumpkin carving set. The job spanned several months, the time being taken up in large part by debates on our side about the comparative merits of different designs. What Went Well: The initial design sketch was so close to being what we wanted that much of the time on the project was spent refining the written copy for the packaging and other small details. Jake had the ability to quickly grasp what we wanted and generate a well-balanced design from it. He was easy to work with - providing excellent ideas and insight without pushing his ideas over ours. Having a designer on our project that was also an illustrator turned out to be a phenomenal asset; there were several elements we had Jake illustrate, and he did them both quickly and well. Jake went above and beyond to ensure everything in our design was finished to our high standards. He is worth more than he charges because of how quickly he produces excellent design. What Could Have Been Better: We needed to clarify some of our ideas before we gave them to Jake to execute. Because we changed the image again and again, Jake ended up drawing a dozen versions of the portrait we wanted, which was outside our contract. I stay current on emerging styles, trends and techniques. I am continually developing skills with a broader range of traditional mediums to create a distinctive look.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Branding, logos, and commissioned art in the style of the client's choice - I have a broad range of artistic style in digital and traditional mediums (pen & ink, acrylic paints).
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Always know that you can ask for a different STYLE. As an illustrator, I can imitate and produce a very wide range of styles. Do you want it more stylized? Cleaner? Messier? With different materials? In a graphic style? In a comic style? In watercolor? Don't get discouraged if the initial sketch is not the style you are looking for. We just need to communicate better about the style you want to see - trust me, whatever it is, it can be done. An essential part of art is experimentation, and sometimes, that is the best way to discover the look and feel of a project.
