When I first sat down with Eduardo expecting to quickly relay my ideas for a logo, I hadn't expected to share my career plans with him. Colors, concepts, and visual graphics became incidental as we shared life experiences, discussed career paths, and labored through several iterations of the logo--I was a picky client, frequently asking how the graphic would turn out if we tweaked the colors or lines a certain way. Eduardo would willingly oblige with his characteristic response, "there's only one way to find out!" I haven't worked with many graphic designers but I'm certain that there aren't many like Eduardo Norell who truly makes the effort and time to understand what the customer wants and is also competent, genuine, and inspirational. I will gladly work with Norell Designs again.

From the first initial consultation I knew immediately I wanted to work with Skyline. We met up with Jacob and Brian. They answered all of my questions, explained new concepts to me, and suggested great ideas. Skylines own website looked very professional and well made and that was very reassuring to me. Olivias design was exactly what I was looking for. She really listened to what I wanted and created a website which was beautiful, easy to navigate, informative but not overwhelming. Through out the entire process, I received outstanding communication about what stage we were in, and any question or concern was answered in an extremely timely fashion. Very pleased with the service I have received and definitely look forward to working with them some more!

This is a LONG overdue review for the wonderful services provided by Jay over at Hospitality Defenders. I came across Hospitality Defenders by chance a few months ago and was sharing with Jay how frustrated I was that I had a business but not a working website and how difficult it was for me to find a web designer that was good and within reasonable budget. Jay offered to meet with me and gave me a free consultation. Immediately after our first meeting, Jay sent me a proposal along with different layout choices, different themes, website content info that he'd need to put together my website.I was a bit overwhelmed but SUPER EXCITED that I found a vendor that knew exactly what I wanted AND knew how to get it for me. I quickly sent Jay all the info that I wanted for my website and he sent me a preview of the website within 2 days! He requested some pictures for my website but I was so busy and lagged on this part. But as soon as I sent it to him, it was uploaded onto the website. When Jay sent me the finished website to look at, I had little changes here and there that I wanted at the last minute and he was SO PATIENT with me and was SUPER RESPONSIVE. The final product far exceeded my expectations - I LOVE MY WEBSITE! Thanks so much, Jay! You're awesome!

My wife and I wanted a piece of art to put in our apartment. The only direction we gave was color scheme (black and red) and left the rest up to him. He gave us a beautiful abstract digital art piece printed on a 20" tall by 60" wide canvas. It is fantastic!

They rate 5 stars in every area I can think of. Creativity, yes! Responsiveness, yes, yes yes! Professionalism, yes! The Idea Garage has built a robust website for the Newmarket Business Association based upon clearly defined needs analysis. They listened to what we wanted, they met our budget and they continue to support like you've never seen! All the while they have been a pleasure to deal with. It is clear they understand how to build websites that are not only attractive, but function well for a given target market. I can't say enough about our great experience with them! Highly recommend you reach out to them.

I hired Karl in March 2013 to design a new website and perform a SEO for my company. He was very professional and easy to work with. He presented me with a detailed contract for his services which was very easy to understand. I felt the prices for his services were very fair. Karl listened to my thoughts and ideas and designed the exact website I had envisioned, complete with shopping cart. He was very helpful in walking me through all the behind the scenes aspects of the website from the business owner's perspective. The SEO Karl performed for me now has my company on the first page of Google! The very first page!!! I am extremely pleased with the quality of work performed by Karl and would not hesitate to hire him again for any future needs.

I am an illustrator and designer residing in Portland, Oregon. I am highly flexible and dependable with experience ranging from botanical illustrations to poster design. My work often revolves around plant and animal life with an emphasis in typography, both digital and traditional work.

The following are the five reasons to hire me: 1. I have the ability to see your vision and not finalize a project until I meet or exceed your expectations. I don't get my feelings hurt if you critique my work. It's not about me, it's about you and what's best for your company. 2. I'm easy to work with. I can mesh with virtually any personality type. I can see eye-to-eye and people feel comfortable communicating with me quickly. 3. I don't have just a couple of styles. The way I design is limitless. I have designed for very conservative, high-end corporations and also for young start-ups that want a modern, retro feel. 4. I'm not lazy. I work hard to provide exceptional materials by or prior to your deadlines. I have been valued for not just my work, but my personal character and work ethics with everyone I have done business with. 5. I'm the best juggler in this side of the Mississippi. I'm the one-stop shop. I am multi-talented, a multitasker and I'm quick! Yet, precision is my second middle name. In this world, you learn soon enough that you get what you pay for. You can pay a little here and there for people who provide "okay" results, or you can invest in something solid, a quality brand with excellent reviews that you know will be worth every penny. That's me. I'm the guy who's here to make your company sit at the popular table. Everyone will want to be your friend -- and your customer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

    • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
    • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
    • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

    • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
    • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
    • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
