- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
1. Don't automatically accepting the lowest bid. The old saying you get what you pay for generally applies here. A higher bid may be worth the price in better materials, workmanship, reliability and service. 2. Don't move forward with a contractor without a written contract. A written contract protects both parties. It is required by law that all construction agreements be committed to a written contract if the price exceeds $2,000. The Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) recommends that all agreements, regardless of price, including all changes to the contract, be in writing. 3. Check the contractors license. A license is required for any construction business that advertises, offers, bids, arranges for, or performs any construction, alteration, home improvement, remodeling or repair work, including painting. IMPORTANT: Homeowners lose the ability to recover damages through the bond as well as the Oregon CCB Dispute Resolution Service (DRS) if they use an unlicensed contractor. 4. Check references. Check with previous customers. Were they satisfied, if so then ask who was in charge and make sure thats who is on your project? Was the work finished within a reasonable time frame? Did the contractor return phone calls? If the person had problems with the contractor, ask how the contractor responded to complaints. Look at examples of the contractors work. 5. Do your homework. Plan your project carefully. Consider your budget. Find pictures, colors and finishes that you like. Create a comprehensive list that details the scope of work that will make you happy, have each painting contractor bid from the same list to ensure you are getting comparable bids. High quality paint or attention to detail may mean something very different to you and your contractor. If possible meet with your painter at one of their finished projects and walk through it with them and explain what you like and dont like.
