Introduction: I create wearable art! I show my work at various festivals and galleries throughout the year. I offer prototype design, repair and costume at my studio in NE Portland. I have 15 years of experience teaching cultural fibre art classes and similar workshops for children. I also teach a class I call "Recycle Your Wardrobe" through local community colleges and organizations. In the class, I guide clients to take "unwearables" found in the back of their closet and turn them into wearable garments through redesign, alteration and artistic treatment. The workshop can be designed for various locations, themes and age groups. Yes, I end up doing a lot of this "wardrobe recycling" for clients in my studio by appointment. I also do basic alterations, prototype work, costumes, slipcovers, etc. I have numerous references from happy, repeat customers who have also become friends. I earned my degree in apparel design at Bassist College (the precursor to Portland Art Institute) and run my small, but colorful studio in NE Portland, Oregon. I love to problem solve! I like helping people get the chance to recycle or renew an existing garment or sewn item rather than having to spend the extra money to go buy something new. There's something wonderful about reaching into your closet to find something to wear that fits, isn't missing buttons, is pressed and ready to go. Also..delighted when I get to join my clients on their "journeys", creating something that's simply unique to them.

Judas work quality was very professional. She has you try on garments. She is very careful to not take in too much. Her prices are very reasonable. She was very responsive to setting up appointments. She was also flexible when there were appointment time changes. She paid close attention to detail and also a person's style of wearing their clothes. She has a great personality. I had to purchase a dress, a long black gown (one STYLE fits all) for a performance group that I'm in. I knew it would need alterations when I bought it because I am different sizes, top and bottom. So I found Judee on Thumbtack and am so glad that I did! When I first tried the dress on, I was a little disappointed in how it looked. Changes needed to be made to the empire waistline, the shoulders, and the hem. After the changes, I am delighted! It's a perfect fit, and it looks SO much better than it would have if I didn't get it altered. And it FEELS better on, too. Judee, thank you, I sing your praises!

Judee helped design and create a beautiful and unique gift for my granddaughter who needed a cape to complete her fairy princess ensemble! What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I base my alteration or basic sewing on $20 per hour. Design and prototype a bit more...but I like to work with my client's budget and find a finished cost we can both be happy with.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Thumbtack is a nice start, but I don't feel a real estimate can be made without a one on one meeting. There are often unseen details. I find my customers and I want a personal communication, to be able to see the actual project, the plans, the fabric... perhaps see my space and to know that they'd like to work with me. Once we've decided on our plan, I have notes, mark deadlines on my calendar, and we agree on the steps to completion, together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My degree is in clothing design from the former Bassist College, now Portland Art Institute. I've had about 40 years of experience in sewing, fibre arts, design, retail sales of my work through galleries and shows and teaching.
