Alisdair is currently providing music consulting for our band, Dreadlight. We we're very impressed initially by how excited he was to work with us and how even at the first phone call, really understood our sound and showed a genuine interest in our musical path. By the first meeting, he had studied nearly every aspect of our work and provided clear and helpful feedback on our current songs. He gave us new and enlightening insight on our instrumentation, vocals, lyrics, and overall sound in an impressively organized and detailed way that spoke to us and strengthened our vision as artists. He told us our strengths and weaknesses honestly and helped us identify key elements in our work that define us. Overall, working with Alisdair has been an enlightening, inspiring experience that has even further strengthened our passion for music. We look forward to continue working with him and growing not just as artists, but human beings as well.

As a vocalist in a worship band I wanted to improve my voice so I joined Sofia's lessons a year ago. My voice became definitely more stable after a couple of months and she helped me to discover my real register. Besides practicing scales she recommended me songs from different styles which I'd not thought before that I could ever sing. She gave me useful instructions how to perform. Because of her sensitivity she found the best personal examples for me. It was really a pleasure to take part in her lessons. We had lots of fun.

We created a life-long memory for my husband's surprise 60th birthday party and David and the All Requests Live band were a big part of that! They were so easy to work with. The videos they provided really impressed me and they more than delivered! They talked with the guests to see if they had any special requests and I think they managed to perform almost every one of them from multiple decades and various genres. They were very flexible and at the last minute even hooked up my niece's phone to their system so she could sing a dedication song she'd been working on that we had no idea about. My family is not known for cutting a rug but everyone was on their feet and had the most amazing time. Thank you so much ARL!

Chris and the UpFront Band performed for our wedding reception. They performed as a 5-piece jazz/swing combo. They were outstanding! We are swing dancers and we wanted the music to swing. They delivered exactly what we requested. They sounded great and were fun and professional. During the planning process, I corresponded with Chris by e-mail. Chris was easy to work with, responsive to our requests, and ready with ideas and suggestions. I highly recommend the UpFront Band for special events for dancers and jazz lovers.

Most efficient and satisfying DJ service. Google Music database had all but a few songs to choose from and I was able to listen to my entire playlist in order to narrow it down to just the right music choices! Hourly prices and a patient phone conference catered to our needs and left me confident, day of. Our DJ nailed it day of, even coordinating with a live band in a small space and short timeframe. Thank you guys for being such a treat!

My Daughter went from never playing an instrument to being proficient on her trumpet in 8 months. Her band teacher is so impressed. Much of her understanding of music comes from her voice and trumpet lessons with Ms. Valardi. She is branching out into piano this summer and has even attempted to write her own solo. A music teacher that understands the excitement of a student and balances that with foundation is a wonderful thing to find. Ms Valardi is just that.

I have been taking guitar lessons from Nathan for 8 years. He is an amazing guitarist and an even more amazing teacher. His knowledge of theory is unsurpassed. He can play all styles of music and explain it and teach it to you in an easygoing, fun way! I absolutely love my time with Nathan and look forward to each lesson. His band (Tango Alfa Tango) is awesome. I highly recommend Nathan for anyone and any level!

Sarah did a one on one workshop with my daughter's band, Death By Thumb. She was able to connect with them immediately and help them sort out some issues they had as a band. Then they went right into song writing. Polished off one and started another all in a two hour period. One song called Mirror was performed just a few weeks later at the Analog Theater in late November. The band members have a lot respect for her and admire what she is doing with her own career. The kids want her to come back as soon as possible! Thank you Sarah, and we hope to see you soon!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
