About
Eighteen years ago Brian Eliason began teaching Music in the Portland area. As he starting teaching he noticed two big holes in the learning of local students. First he noticed students who could play by ear well but did not understand the reading the notes. Second he noticed students who could read notes but had not developed their ability to play by ear. From this experience he created the Complete Instruction Method, a balanced approach that teaches musicians how to learn music purely by hearing it as well as the skill of reading and understanding sheet music. This balanced, dual approach gives students more tools to achieve higher levels of play, it removes frustration and brings out the joy in experiencing music! The method has caught on and has grown from a studio of a dozen students to a school of 400 students of all ages who now participate in this new approach to learning. The method works for all instruments and currently is being taught at the school for piano, violin, cello, viola and guitar. We welcome you to visit our website or give us a call anytime to find out more about how fun and rewarding it can be to learn music. One of the most enjoyable aspects of teaching is listening to music that sounds poor at first and showing someone how to change it and beautify it. It is also very rewarding to watch students love to play their instruments for the pure joy of playing.

Chris, my instructor for violin lessons, is great! It is clear he typically works with children, but is personable and, as an adult, has escalated the learning process to save time. I fully intend to continue getting lessons through Chris, and the owner (Brian I believe), was very responsive to emails.

Brian read the description of what I was looking for and offered exactly that service (in-home lessons in the evening, convenient for our 2-parent-working family). The teacher he recommended, Chad, has done a great job with our 7 year old, who is enjoying learning and even practices without much complaint :)

Hi Alison, Thank you for the review, I am glad the lessons are going so well! We appreciate having your family be a part of the school, if you need anything please let us know.

My child started with Brian when she was 7 years old, and progressed from Suzuki Book 1---all the way to Bruch concertos by age 15. I was always amazed at Brian's way of teaching---patient, sensitive, yet always finding ways to move and kindly challenge my daughter to further develop her skills and techniques. Brian is at and will always be at the top of my list for an extraordinary teacher of violin for children. L. Fukuzawa

Hi Lani, Thank you for the great review. Perhaps the most difficult part about being a teacher is seeing students move away and off to College. I am very proud of everything that your daughter has accomplished as a musician and I hope she will continue to play and love music for a lifetime!

I have been a violin student at Eliason School of Music for 10 years, beginning in the third grade. Despite becoming older over the course of my lessons, the teaching style always suited me perfectly. My teacher, Brian, was never patronizing but also was not too harsh. Thanks to his teaching, I was able to become a member of Metropolitan Youth Symphony's highest ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, in my sophomore year. I really appreciated how my teacher exposed me to a range of music that was tailored to my playing style. He also taught me with techniques that presented an idea so that it appealed to different modes of learning. The concept of bow control, for example, would be taught using analogies, theory, visual indicators, listening, and physical manipulation of the bow. I believe this multifaceted approach deepened my knowledge and improved my playing. Above all, the concern that Brian and the school in general had for my individual musical experience placed my lessons significantly above average. I was always treated like a unique person and given choices to make violin as enjoyable as possible. My lessons at Eliason School of Music are one of the things I will miss most as I leave for college in the fall.

Both of my kids are learning violin with Brian right now, and my elder one have taken lessons from Brian for 6 years. Brian is very knowledgeable, and patient with kids. I would strongly recommend him.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Our music school in Portland have over 400 students taking guitar, piano, cello, viola and violin lessons every week. As music teachers in every lesson we create personalized lesson plans while encouraging and motivating our students to enjoy playing music with the guitar, cello, violin, viola & piano..

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

It is a good idea to choose a music teacher who has at least a Bachelor's degree in music. Finding a teacher for lessons with the cello, guitar, violin or piano who specializes in teaching is also good because this focus will be evident in the quality of instruction you or your student receives in his/her lessons. A school environment is preferable to a home because in a school there are less distractions and it is a space for learning.
