Very pleased with the work. During the estimating process it became clear Josh is knowledgeable and sees the little details. He found a couple of subtle but important issues I had missed in assessing the project (one from a previous contractors work). Josh and his crew are friendly, efficient and cleaned up afterwards. Our project came out better than our expectations. The tile work is excellent and they even found a very close match for a decade old tile to make a repair. They also matched the paint color for a little touch up on the walls and ceiling as well. We will use them again.

We hired Glenn with the intentions of just getting our flooring upstairs from cheap off white carpet to Bamboo click lock. We were skeptical about his low price but in the end we were extremely satisfied with the out come. We ended up hiring him to do much more. We discovered he was experienced in much more. He completely remodeled our down stairs bathroom/laundry room for a reasonable price including tearing out the stand up shower re plumbing and then tiling, tearing down walls and rebuilding a closet, repositioning the gas line for the dryer, and much more. He is very trust worthy and has good work ethic.

I've worked with a dozen contractors over the last year on an extensive home remodel and the best experience I've had, by far, has been with Zeev. His motivation is 100% to create a finished product that I will be proud of and he did so in the process of executing an extremely complex electrical plan. I could not recommend Zeev highly enough.

I went with Compass as Chris was able to give me a time to replace my garbage disposal unit. He was thoughtful to say there was a traffic delay and still make it with a few minutes. After the installation, Chris took a look at another plumbing problem with a shower faucet and we made plans to repair that at a later date. Call him if you're in need of most household repairs.

I would like to thank A&C contractors for helping me fix the mess and unfinished work left behind by Portland Pacific Construction. They were willing to work within my means and provide honest communication as to what could be accomplished within a limited budget. The were also willing to try to complete the work in a timely manor and maintain good communication through out the renovation to ensure that work was completed to satisfaction. I would highly recommend A&C contractors for any home owner who has need of help on their home projects.

Daniel hung 4 doors, ran all the baseboard trim, windows trim and trimmed out 3 closets for me. Additionally, he filled, caulked and painted all the trim and painted the trim and doors. Three of the doors and jambs needed to be altered so it was no easy job. He also filled, primed and painted the risers on my fir stairs. His bid was extremely reasonable and his start date was exactly when I needed it. Daniel is polite, clean, professional, on time and on budget. He worked long hours and was really flexible while I was lining up floor refinishing. Really, he is a great guy and his work is high quality. Daniel was a pleasure to work with and communicate with. He is prompt on returning messages. I wish all the contractors I used were as good as Daniel. The work he did for me was on a rental and I will be using him to hang some exterior doors, run trim and pain at the house I live in. I showed his work to a few neighbors and they want his number now. It was a pleasure to work with Daniel and I will be using him for all my carpentry needs. He is highly recommended for any of your remodeling needs.

He did a great job and showed up on time and prepared. He is a perfectionist and won't finish until he knows the job is done right. Really nice, clean and personable. I would hire him again. My shower looks great and all the lines line up perfectly, which is hard to do. He also had a great helper with him.

We used Eric and his team for an almost 2.5 month project after moving back into our old house that was rented out for several years. Initially we were only going to use them for external and internal painting and cabinet refinishing, but we quickly found that we liked working with them and appreciated Eric's commitment, his obvious knowledge and attention to detail which led to us hiring them to replace our flooring and other various projects around the house from the shower door installation, carpentry work to smaller electrical work. We lived in the house while Eric's team did the work, which can get pretty overwhelming. They communicated well, respected our privacy and worked with kids nap times, weekend trips, etc. I can honestly say that I could not imagine this project going any better considering the circumstances. We were satisfied with the final product and we found the pricing to be reasonable. We found especially the painting job to be top notch, this is definitely their specialty. Eric also wrapped some beams and accent walls in cedar. Those turned out awesome as well. I highly recommend using those guys for any project, big or small. They have pride in their work and at the end you will not feel taken advantage of, which is too often the case when working with other contractors.

First thing...Mr. Carillo called me within minutes of posting to tell me he couldn't speak with me at length however would be calling me later that same day. And he did! Came out and gave me two different bids dependent upon how much of the work I'd do myself. Victor and his crew adapted as the original job changed. Now that's a great thing in a contractor! His crew showed up on time, kept the site clean, worked well together and were respectful and fun to have around. Oh right, and the finished project is wonderful! Will have them back when my next project pops up.

I just completed a condo remodel for a client in SW Portland. I worked with the client to help her design and project manage the work from start to finish. Part of the process is partnering with General Contractors to undertake the work. This project included a kitchen remodel, (new cabinets, quartz, appliances etc) new flooring and painting throughout. Ben was selected as the contractor to do the work for a variety of reasons. He was responsive, communicated well, his rates were good and he committed to get the work done in just over 3 weeks so they could list the property on the market. Ben worked long hours to achieve this, was flexible throughout the process and listened well. In this case he was managing my expectations and meeting the needs of the client. The work got achieved on time, within budget and the client is very happy with the end result. I would certainly use Ben again on another client project. Thank you!

Paul/Home Run Construction are a HOME RUN...make it a GRAND SLAM! So professional and easy to work with and outstanding communication throughout the project. Paul takes pride in his work and he completed my project timely and on budget. As an attorney I see clients and cases with all kinds of flakey contractors who run over budget and do shoddy work. Paul is NOT one of those! Solid and good man who does excellent work! I can say without hesitation that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Paul and Home Run Construction and will continue to look to him for future projects.

Travis and his team did a pretty good job on our fence. The staff was respectable and nice. They asked a lot of questions etc around work which I preferred. The fence turned out exactly as I had asked for but required close monitoring via communication. They were timely and affordable...and while the quality of the work might not a 5 star...for what they did, it was a fair price. I would work with this team again. I had quotes for our fence from at least 9 contractors...and only All Backyard Construction and another quoted me this low. You are getting decent quality work for a good price. I would recommend them to friends and family...and I just recommended them to a colleague as we speak.

Just a great experience all around. Dave was very responsive to all of our needs and gave us a lot of excellent advice on the best options for replumbing our floating home as he was knowledgable about many of the unique challenges. The plumber he sent to do the job was one of the hardest working contractors we have ever had here. He was able to complete the entire house in one day even when this meant time in our attic during our recent heat wave. The job even came in a few hundred under the estimate. When we had a small leak pop up and contacted Dave he had a plumber there within an hour to fix it and even installed a new bathroom faucet for free. We will definitely have Ranieri Plumbing back out to put in a second 1/2 bath we plan soon.

John Rank helped with remodeling our basement. It was a major job that included changing a large crawl space into a living room. It took about 12 weeks to complete. John is great to work with. He is very organized and keeps everything running smoothly. He is very good at keeping engineers. individual contractors and inspectors coming/going on schedule. He kept us informed of any issues that came up. The quality of work is great - we are so happy with the finished area, especially the built in cabinetry that John did himself. The only thing that could have been better is to have more time to order specific finishes and to be more involved in the design of the entertainment center.

The fellows from RM BIRD were fantastic! They listened to my needs, worked with my meager budget to remove mold & re-tile a tub/shower stall, were very responsive in starting the project & finished with great efficiency. There was a slight issue with the grout settling & leaving a couple of small holes, so I called Steve. He came out the next day after his regular work day was done to repair it. I was impressed by that bit of professionalism. It was my first time hiring a contractor; it won't be the last time hiring RM BIRD. Thanks guys!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
