Namita was great! She was on time, very friendly, patient, and her artwork was fantastic. We loved that she was willing to henna men for our mehendi, though we were a bit disappointed that she wasn't willing to give them their requested designs, but designs she had for men only and that we did not know that when we hired her. However, not many henna artists are willing to henna men, so we're still thankful she was willing to do it. At the end of the day, we felt exceptionally beautiful for our wedding thanks to Namita's work and would recommend her.

Alana worked as the professional makeup artist for a recent Video Shoot with me and my troupe of tribal fusion belly dancers. She was excellent! Professional demeanor, very skilled and made us comfortable while we were on the set for 7 hours. We needed everything from glamor makeup to body painting and some SFX. Alana not only was up for the task but exceeded our expectations. Overall we had a wonderful experience with Alana and hope to work with her again in the near future.

Hi I'm Melanie, I am so happy that I meet Nayda. I was searching for a henna artist on the web. I found one person but she lived to far so she called and told me about Nayda. We talked and texted. I just had a baby about 5months ago then. I told her I was trying to get my sexy back lol. So we made a date we meet and she did this BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL henna art from my foot to my thigh, it made me feel just the way I wanted sexy. My husband LOVED it. I would recommend Nayda to any and everybody. Love ya mamas?

I had wanted a very specific and nuanced project done for about ten years now: A very heavy metal looking portrait of myself. Yes its silly. But I wanted it. So badly. Just me, in a t-shirt and jeans, doing something so metal it would take your breath away. For a decade I had this idea and I'm glad I waited. No other artist could have delivered my vision for me as well as Katie Haire did. Katie was super easy to work with. She took time to listen to what I wanted done and then improved on my original ideas in ways I would have never thought possible. I now have a work of art that reflects what I wanted that will last me a life time. I can not recommend Katie hard enough. Beyond being a prodigious artist, she is an admirable human; patient, understanding, punctual, and brilliant. Congrats to you, dear reader -- your search is over. You have found your artist.

Naiya does a beautiful job applying henna. You can truly see her skill come to life in her work. I always get compliments when I get henna put on by her and a ton of questions on who applied the unique designs. I highly recommend her to anyone who needs henna services. You will not be disappointed!! :)

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
