I had a tree that was mostly dead and falling apart that had electric and cable wires running through it. He climbed up, and working old school...dropped all of the branches without clipping the wires or doing any damage to the gutters or fences in my yard or my neighbor's yard. Did it all in a day, and hauled it all away. What more can you ask for ?

Amazing!! Is the word we would use to describe these guys. We received 3 quotes and they were the most competitive. They cleared 9 trees, old brush, weeds....and put in a dog fence. They were absolute professionals and very accommodating. They were so good - 2 of our neighbors asked for quotes. We will definitely hire them again next season to clear some more trees, clear more brush and plant some trees. Great guys and we look forward to working with them again!

Beth and Rob are both knowledgeable and professional. They provided options for design and hardware, made recommendations, and built the fence with efficiency. They listened to what I wanted in a fence - tall and strong enough to keep a rottie safe and happy; and designed to match neighbors' fences. They took the time to find the lumber and styles. I am very happy with their effort. As other projects arise I'll be calling them. Thanks guys!

I have used Carlgin Home Imorovements for many projects including a bathroom remodel and fence repair. Jeff does beautiful work in a timely manner and always calls me back to schedule an appointment quickly. He pays a lot of attention to small details and makes sure I'm totally satisfied with every project. Trustworthy and fair priced, I will always use Carlgin for any work around my house!

We love Donlin Construction and will be using them for future projects! Barry Donlin and his team have been wonderful through every step of our time with them. I am a woman, but I'm the member of the household that takes care of scheduling and meeting with contractors, etc. Too many companies have either required my husband be present or asked for "the man of the house". This was a complete non-issue Barry and his team. They answered my questions thoroughly without being patronizing. So far, they have given us a free estimate on a finished basement remodel (which we plan to do in the future) and have replaced our roof. We are very pleased with their quality, communication, pricing, courtesy, and punctuality. We plan to work with them again on several future projects including fencing and various home improvements. We can't recommend them highly enough!

First, my quote came when he said it would. For me this is a big deal. If you can't get the basics right, how can I trust you'll get the work done as promised? I had my firepit reset, 5 huge bushes ripped out and the land prepped for grass, edging and mulch around my pool area, 50 tree stumps removed and grass planted, and my garden fence fixed. This wasn't all in the original plan but once I saw the quality of work and the fair price, I added projects. My neighbors have been raving about the consistent hard work he did and the transformation to my property. I have yet to find a landscaper I'll stick with due to work not being complete right and the high cost. Not only was the work I asked for done correctly, he also did a few things just to make sure it looked good. He trimmed and shaped the overgrown bushes, removed the forest growing around my kids play area, and set my tiki torches in place. This is a hardworking group who goes above and beyond what they promise. Two of my neighbors have already asked for the information for next year solely based off of how hard they worked. Once I added how fairly priced they are, I think it sealed the deal. This will be my go to company from now on. Small business owners make it happen because their livelihood depends on it. This is evident in the work they put in. There are alot of people who claim they are family owned and operated. This one actually is. Hire them, you won't be disappointed!

Rebuilt most of an older fence that had fallen into disrepair due to age. Steve was prompt and responsive in preparing an estimate and doing the work. He did what he said he would do in the time frame he promised and did a few extra things he wasn't asked to do without charge. High quality work done timely, reliable, good communicator. I would definately hire Eck & Son LLC again.

Jason came out to mow my lawn today for the first time and I couldn't be more pleased with the results! It looks fantastic! It was beautifully cut in well defined lines, everything was very neatly trimmed and the sidewalk and very long driveway were all swept clean! Jason set the standard very high with this initial service and convinced me that I definitely made the right choice in choosing Jim's Lawn Landscape and Fence as my lawn service! I am very happy with the job and would highly recommend them to anyone! Thanks Jason!

Mr. Beecher is a very nice young man, just getting started in his business. He removed 7 bushes, one of which was a small tree. It took 4 hard tugs with his diesel truck to remove the tree. Step stone pavers were put down, decorative arches were put up next to the neighbors fence and a very crowded flower bed was cleaned out. Everything was mulched. It took 2 days and I am very satisfied with his work. He was punctual, pleasant to work with, paid attention to what I wanted and I would highly recommend him. It was somewhat pricey but considering all of the work that was done, it was indeed a reasonable amount.

My wife & I are 1st time home owners, and our deck was hit hard by this winter’s harsh weather. Rotting wood, chipping paint, and dirt/fungus build up was looking bad. Thanks to Tyler, our deck was completely refinished with a HIGH attention to detail. It looks and feels brand new and was done at the BEST price in less than 2 weeks from when we first contacted Tyler. Tyler treated this project like it was his own deck, and that is a rare thing to find. Incredible work! In the past year we’ve worked with many electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and landscapers working on our new house. Tyler stands out as being above and beyond the best at communication and punctuality. He got started on the job quickly, and always gave us updates as to when he would be working and when the project would be complete. He made sure we knew exactly what was going on, and gave us lots of insightful suggestions and options on how to get the best results. Tyler is experienced and knowledgeable, and worked with high quality Benjamin Moore exterior stain. Other contractors I quoted just planned on using a cheaper exterior paint that would’ve degraded much more quickly. Tyler did extensive prep work to make sure our deck was ready to paint. He ensured there was proper draining, cleared out hidden dirt between the deck boards, properly addressed and filled all the gaps and cracks, and better secured the railing and privacy fence. Other contractors I talked to just planned a simple power wash and paint, which would not have been enough to give our deck a several more years of life. I look forward to hiring Tyler again in the future to help us with our various projects around the house. His depth of knowledge, attention to detail, and prompt communication makes him easily the best contractor we’ve worked with. If you have a project you need done with quality and a high attention to detail, my wife and I highly recommend Tyler!

I first contacted Randy over 10 years ago to find out information about a privacy fence. He was very quick to return my call. At that time we scheduled an estimate date when he would come to my home and look at the area I had asked about. I was very happy that he showed up on time, and he was prepared to show me privacy fence options. We scheduled another date to then finalize my project. I was very impressed that Randy stayed within my budget. He also suggested and eventually used plants that worked best in my yard and my ability to care for them as they matured. Since that original project I have had Randy back to do more work and have referred him to many of my friends and he even does work at my parents home. I would always recommend him and I hope to have him back soon start a new project.

Chuck and Ron were on time and had to replace part of a old split rail fence, gate and added a NEW chain link gate for me to be able to get my riding mower out as I am disabled. Chuck was very accommodating, very professional and I have already scheduled him to do another project on our deck. The pricing was very reasonable and I highly recommend Chuck for any project you have.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
      • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
      • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
      • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

      • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
      • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
      • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
      • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
      • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
      • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
      • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
      • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
