The 3 men who came to move us were fabulous! We had never used movers before and our furniture is extremely heavy. They were professional , efficient, trustworthy punctual and hard workers. They were very concerned about doing a good job and no damage. We would definitely use them again and recommend them to everyone. They were also very friendly and left you at ease.

I had a pretty straightforward request to move heavy equipment up a flight of stairs. While there’s a minimum charge for such a small job, Art was very flexible about adding the removal of a bunch of empty boxes that have been piling up in the house. The 2 gentlemen came on time and took care of everything I needed. They were very professional and efficient in getting the job done. I would definitely use this service again.

This was the first time I had ever hired movers. The experience I had with this company far exceeded my expectations. Josephine in the office was so pleasant and accommodating. Even offering to call me outside of regular business hours to better suit my schedule. The price for 2 movers and a truck for 3 hours was extremely reasonable. On the day of the move the guys were early, which I appreciated. They worked well as a team and worked quickly and efficiently. As a single woman moving between 3 different properties with 2 men I didn’t know, I have to admit I was hesitant about what to expect. But, I never felt unsafe. They were nice, helpful and extremely professional. Every aspect of my experience with Moyer’s Movers exceeded my expectations. I would recommended them highly for anyone needing moving assistance.

Excellent communication. Very professional and friendly staff who made the move in Philadelphia easy. I would highly recommend ( I am hard to impress). After a long day.....the movers asked, "before we leave, is there any piece of furniture we could reposition for you." Very pleased with the whole experience and would hire again.

We were moving from a one bedroom apartment, but had some extra furniture in the basement storage. Dave arrived with two movers and they moved quickly and efficiently. We were very pleased with their service.

John was amazing! I was very anxious about moving some heavy stuff from a basement, which I knew would be challenging. John was able to take care of everything right when he said he would And for the exact price (which was beyond reasonable) that we discussed. I don't look forward to ever moving again but when I do, john will be my first call!!

Great communication. They was generally very little uncertainty which is sadly uncommon when dealing with movers. They were on time for pick up and when they were running late for delivery I recieved a timely notification. Price is a bit high but I was short on time and the work was done as expected.

I got Jeff and his crew from Thumbtack because I needed movers on short notice to move several bigger pieces of furniture. I had never heard of them and did not know what to expect - although Jeff was responsive and professional on the phone. In short, Jeff and his team were on time, professional, and courteous. He gave me a flat rate, which was a little more up front than others who gave hourly quotes and proposed time estimates. In the end, Jeff's rate was either better or, at least, competitive with the others. He kept to his flat rate and did not charge a dime more. I would use Light Hauling again in the future and would recommend them to others.

This is my first experience using professional movers. I’ve been hesitant in the past because of the experiences of friends and family. I couldn’t be happier with my experience with Jameson Moving. Matt couldn’t have been quicker to respond to my initial message and each text or call I made to him afterwards. He was kind, professional, and more than helpful, not to mention very accommodating as my move was on very short notice. Devon and Aaron were just as amazing. They were incredibly efficient as the movers. I was shocked at how quickly and safely they were able to move my apartment. They were also both incredibly kind, professional, and friendly. I very confidently recommend Jameson Moving. I’d suggest them to any of my friends and family and won’t hesitate to use them in the future!

Excellent movers. Tiamokkee and his team were great. Fast, super careful with my belongings, friendly, and the price was more than fair. They went above and beyond - example, had a really heavy bookcase that didn't fit through my door - they took time to explain why and show me the measurements - then took the bookcase to my friends house for storage. I don't know many companies that would have done the same. I cannot thank them enough for making a stressful day so much less so!

There are so many local movers to choose from that it is difficult to narrow down. In the end, I chose On-Demand Moving Services because of their honesty. It's easy to acknowledge a great review, but not so easy to respond to those few negative ones. This group does not shy away from responding. That touts honesty to me. The three men showed up on time, navigated some tough stairs, and the job came in under budget. Total professionals. They even brought a cover for my matress to keep it from getting soiled. Not one item was damaged, nor no damage to the walls. Would definitely recommend.

Everything went smoothly from start to finish. Maria was very responsive and answered all my questions promptly. The price that they quoted me was very reasonable compared to others. Movers were efficient with their moving, and we had no problems. They were really friendly and made me feel comfortable. They even showed up 15 minutes early at my origin. I would highly recommend their services!

Well first that me stress the fact that I reached out to JVL, frantically only 48 hours prior to my move. Not even a hour after I put in a contact request someone reached out to me. The guys were are extremely courteous and very professional. They arrived within the time slot which they predicted ready to work! They were more than helpful and patient with me during my move, not once did I have to direct them with anything; they even offered to take the tv off the wall for me so that I didn’t have to wait on maintenance! There were four movers so the apartment was clear in no time. I would definitely recommend JVL moving company to others who are looking for a easy stress free move and would use them again without any hesitation.

The movers were on time and did a great job moving a piano up and down two sets of stairs and around a tight turn. They were very strong and also very smart in dealing with this tough move. I'd definitely use them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
