Sandy was amazing. My dog is not fond of strangers and before Sandy was leaving she was jumping in her arms and loving her. Her positive training is really working and I saw the difference in my dog within only a few hours. With her price and ability to travel to you there is no one out there that even comes remotely close in terms of a dog trainer. I will be recommending Sandy to EVERYONE that ever asks me about dog training.

I would highly recommend Amazing Paws for all your dog training needs. Anna helped us get through some behavioral issues with our dog. She explained things very clearly and answered all of our questions. She is very knowledgeable and has tons of experience. Our session with her left me feeling very confident about knowing how to work with our dog. I can't say enough good things about Amazing Paws and Anna. Her prices are more then reasonable and so worth it. If we have anymore issues I will definitely be calling her again and will recommend her to anyone I know with a dog.

When I was looking for training for my lab mix ruby I didn’t feel that she would get anything out of the experience from a franchise pet store so I started my search for dog trainers who knew how to read and work with dogs on a one to one level. Steve came to our apartment and showed us exactly how to handle ruby. We already had a good base from watching a lot of ceasar millan (haha) but we needed more and steve guided us. Even after one day with his methods, ruby is a completely different dog. It will take take with her but now we have the confidence she will be a very well rounded dog. We will send an update in about a month to show her progress.

We recently completed Adult 1 Manners with our 10 month old puppy, Foxy. It was so much fun to watch her "get it". As this is our first dog, much of the training helped us get comfortable with her. House breaking, biting, and jumping has improved with lighting speed. Her leash skills are much improved; she learned to wait for us as we go out the a door; she has learned how to go home to her bed; she responds to the word, "come" so much better then before. She has also learned to sit, lie down, stay and to leave it. We are looking forward to starting the Canine Good Citizen class. Marion has a way of balancing her professionalism with her humor. She is available for questions during class or afterwards by phone or email. She has a way of letting you know that you need to work a bit more if you want your dog to improve without putting pressure on you to do so. In addition to the skills we have learned in class we have learned things about the best kind of leash for our dog; when to use what kinds of treats; the best way to crate and ideas for practicing at home with the emphasis on a few minutes throughout the day rather than time consuming practices. We feel it has been well worth the 1/2 hour drive to Molasses Creek and recommend Marion as a trainer. Her greatest strength is her undeniable love of dog

My husband and I are so happy that we have discovered Steve Broadwell from Diamonds In The Woof to help us with our dog, Winston. Steve has been a life-saver and we are so pleased working with him. He is professional, highly knowledgeable, and has not only helped our dog, but has helped us, too. Our dog is a handful and we're still a work in progress, but Winston has really come a long way, all thanks to Steve. We not only feel as though we have hired the best dog-trainer in the area (we have!), but we have also made a friend who truly loves and cares about our dog.

Heather accomplished more in 3 sessions than previous dog trainers who spent much, much more time, but were less knowledgeable about how to effectively handle my dog's behavioral problems. She went directly to the problem behavior and after each session had produced lasting results. Everyone says my dog is like a whole different dog while maintaining his great enthusiasm for being alive. Positive training and rewards all the way. I would highly recommend her services. She doesn't just talk, she delivers.

Kayla is great- I couldn’t ask for a better training expirience. She was extremely patient, thorough, and compassionate with my pup. I was so impressed with how quickly he was able to respond and learn from her! Kayla was also very communicative and patient with me, as this was my first time training a dog. I’d highly recommend Kayla for your doggie needs!

I tried 2 other dog trainers before working with Matt Ferramosca @ OLK9 training...what a difference! Matt is the best trainer I have ever worked with! I have a 2yr old energetic and very verbal German Shepherd .After his 2 week board and train, Alex is a different dog! I have walked him off leash in a park during a very busy weekend with people kids bikes and other dogs and he was wonderful! I rec'd many complements but referred the compliments to Matt at OLK9 Training. And the training doesn't end there! Matt is always available via phone text or email for questions and concerns! I highly recommend Matt and OLK9 Training for all of your training needs for big and small dogs of all breeds!

I have worked with Ryan with my both my personal dogs and my foster dogs, and he has made a world of difference with them. His years and years of experience show in his work and ability to handle any foster dog I've introduced him to, and trust me, there have been some EXTREMELY difficult ones. Not only has he helped me with difficult cases, he takes a personal interest in my fosters. There was one particular dog who needed a very specific home, and Ryan was more than willing to meet the potential family to ensure that it was the perfect fit for both the family and the dog. I will be forever grateful for all he's taught me and I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a dog trainer!

Excellent dog trainer and dog sitter. We have been with Bark U since we got our puppy a year ago. They are very caring, trustworthy and responsible. Easily reached for advice and questions. Christine is like a second mommy to our dog. I don't have to look to a kennel because Bark U also provides boarding. My dog gets to stay with someone he knows and trusts, gets to continue his schooling with his canine buddies and training while we are away. I never have to worry. Excellent service. Highly recommend.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
