I hired Robin to help me with updating 18 yr.old townhouse I downsized to. I have changed my preferences from traditional to a pared down contemporary look. Robin is helping me with this transition by planning work in phases so I can budget ,color scheme selection, repositioning of current furniture and guidance about new purchases. She is highly professional, realistic, style versatile and very importantly -practical about my needs. She is not like other designers I have encountered who charge exhorbitant rates or require you to buy products. She is truly a design consultant and customer focused. Her rates are very reasonable -whether you want her help with a small project or a complete design and project management of a whole house remodel. I am still working with her on my next project - I highly recommend her.

I would have to rate this company & Eric as excellent. It is so difficult these days, to get companies to meet your expectations, let alone meet them but GS Flook did just that. This cabinet build was really a small project so I wasn't sure GSF would even be interested. But Eric came to the house, we discussed what I wanted in a design, & he even worked with me on material choices, to get the cost in line. The finished cabinet is beautiful, exactly what I wanted, taking an empty wall, filling the space & giving us much needed storage. Hope we can work together again, Thank you Gene Bell Camp Hill, PA

Initially, I asked Ana to do window treatments for my bedroom. She was able to find fabric that coordinated beautifully with the color of my bedspread. The details on the window treatments are really extraordinary. Ana also helped me to pick a great color to paint the room after removing 14 year-old wallpaper. The bedroom looks beautiful. Ana also totally transformed my living room. She really listened to the feel that I wanted to create, and respected that throughout the process of choosing furniture styles, fabrics, window treatments, and accent pieces. I felt very comfortable telling her what appealed to me and what didn't. She always kept looking until she found something that I didn't just like, but loved! Ana used things that I already had whenever possible. A wooden screen from the living room is now creatively displayed on a large wall in my foyer. She works very hard to stay within a given budget, and I was never pressured to make a purchase. Ana is extremely professional in all respects. She always made appointments at times that were convenient for me, placed orders as quickly as possible, followed up with the companies with any questions, and kept me informed about deliveries. The highlight was the day all of the furniture was delivered. Ana arranged everything the room, including pictures and other decorative items. The impact of seeing the completed room was amazing! It is even better than I ever imagined it could be. After living with the new room, I decided that I want to make some changes in other areas. Ana has found a chandelier for the foyer and lights for the hallways. She has a great idea for displaying pictures where quilt is now hanging. I've also asked her to start thinking about creating a unique powder room. I know that she will come up with a solution for the small space that will make a great statement. I would highly recommend Ana to anyone looking for a decorator who is personable, professional, and creative.

RudeWood is a refreshingly artistic custom design workshop in Lancaster, PA. Using innovation and creativity to fabricate timeless designs throughout eastern Pennsylvania, Co-owners Alex Rudegeair and Jeremiah Linton, are taking reclaimed woodworking and home renovation to a new level of artistry. Earlier this year, my husband and I were looking for a barrel wine rack to add to our finished basement. We had an idea of what we wanted, and after numerous searches at local furniture stores, artisan shops, and on line, we also knew exactly what we did not want. Being very familiar with Alex and Jeremiah’s work, we reached out to them for some inspiration and design ideas. Within just a week or so, they came up with what would become a uniquely creative, beautifully designed and finished 48-bottle wine barrel stave wine rack and buffet fully fitted with a slide out cheese board made from the barrel’s lid. Although wine stave racks are available all over the internet, what RudeWood created was unlike anything I had ever seen. The entire piece was hand crafted from a Napa Valley wine barrel and nearly all pieces of the barrel were used. Just take a look at their portfolio/website, and you will see how RudeWood exquisitely combines strength, beauty, the old, and the new to carefully create awe-inspiring, one-of-a-kind, heirloom quality pieces and concepts for their customers.

Kevin at Maxson Remodel is excellent, very professional and easy to work with. We had the following done: Kitchen: ceramic tile dishwasher and fridge installed painted Living Room: glass tile above the fireplace in the living room curtains installed painted He has some great ideas, so we actually let him pick the ceramic and glass tile, curtains and paint colors. He helped us pick the appliances and new furniture in the living room. He has a great eye for interior design and we love the way the paint and tile in the rooms came together. His prices are reasonable. Would definitely recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
