Introduction: I offer private yoga instruction. This is the fast-track way to making deeper progress in your health and happiness. Foster a more regular yoga practice with convenient class times customized for your schedule in a comfortable, one-on-one environment. Those with special needs or specific wellness goals also benefit because yoga teachers in group classes are more limited in their ability to address personal, private issues. Private yoga ensures that you're practicing the right kind of yoga safely and effectively. Is Private Yoga Instruction For Me? Whether you are a beginner with many questions, a seasoned practitioner looking to refine your practice or someone who wants individually tailored instruction, private yoga instruction is immensely helpful. It gives you the extra bit of attention and care that you might need to address specific personal needs, questions or injuries. Whether you're just trying out yoga or want to fine-tune your existing yoga practice, you'll benefit greatly from personally tailored sequences of yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation designed to help you meet your wellness goals. Regardless of level, age or stage of life, private lessons provide the perfect setting to address your individual goals and needs. For new students, I will introduce you to the fundamentals of yoga postures and breathing techniques, selecting postures which meet your specific needs, offering hands-on adjustments to ensure that you develop a safe and beneficial yoga practice. For experienced students, explore specific areas of interest, work on mastering more advanced postures or learn to overcome any fear that might be holding your practice back. For all students, I can work with you to develop a customized daily practice, which can improve the quality of your life. Reasons to Consider Private Instruction 1. You are considering beginning a yoga practice but would like to start out with individual instruction, so that you can join the group class with a greater sense of confidence and ease. A block of five private yoga lessons is a great introduction to the yoga postures and breathing exercises, which maximizes opportunity for individual feedback and attention to alignment, balance and breath within each posture. When you are brand-new to yoga, you may feel intimidated. Maybe you hope to join the neighborhood yoga studio or attend yoga classes but are just too shy to jump in? Private sessions are an excellent way to begin your own yoga practice. Develop your confidence by learning the fundamentals of yoga at your own pace. Ask questions when you like, take your time in learning the poses, rest when you need to, and receive the individualized attention that you may not feel comfortable asking in a group setting. 2. You are struggling with old injuries, limitations or issues with balance. A private yoga lesson will provide a personalized attention to help you get the most out of each posture and allow you to practice with more ease. Attention to details, modifications and adjustments in poses can be made, so that you learn how to protect yourself on and off your mat, or maybe you are recovering from cancer, surgery or other illness/disease and want the extra care that is required while you build your strength physically, emotionally and spiritually. 3. You have begun a regular practice but would like to deepen your understanding of the postures or strengthen your practice. A weekly or biweekly private lesson is a great way to ask questions to clarify alignment and breath work and get tips and corrections to amplify and maximize your experience in class. Perhaps you are interested in understanding more about the ancient and broad teachings of yoga. You may want to investigate more difficult poses or receive complete and detailed adjustments, or there may be specific practices such as pranayama (breath work) or meditation that you would like to add to your practice. Private sessions allow us to tailor the teaching to your specific desires and inquiries. 4. You have been away from yoga for a while. You've had an active practice in the past but are just getting back into yoga perhaps due to an illness or injury. Private sessions can allow you to reintegrate your body back into your practice while taking special care of your physical or emotional needs. 5. You would like to develop a home practice. You may be a beginner or an experienced yogi who understands the benefits of a daily practice but would like assistance developing one. Together, we can create your own practice, working on your areas of interest, such as alignment, sequencing, pranayama, meditation and/or the philosophical aspects of yoga. You have questions regarding some of the "other stuff" that shows up in your yoga practice, emotions that rise to the surface, thoughts that seem to run wild, unfamiliar sensations or a sense of struggle or discomfort as you begin to peel back layers of experience. You are looking to cultivate a deeper sense of stillness, meditation and focus in class but not sure where to begin. Consider a private lesson to address some of your deeper questions and intentions regarding your personal practice and clarify what you are hoping to receive from your yoga practice. Yoga is a practice that is beneficial to everyone at any age, whether it be for weight loss and toning, lengthening muscles and increasing flexibility of athletes or to help in the healing and recovery of cancer or surgical procedures. I've dedicated myself to the study, practice, and teaching of yoga after personally using it to heal and save myself from serious depression, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and a severe neck injury. I can integrate yoga, essential oils, nutrition and lymphatic massage for those who are interested. Yoga therapy is the therapeutic use of yoga, specifically to help alleviate or manage disease conditions. We aim to improve health and wellness at the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being through a healing journey. Yoga therapy works with your goals. Each session is tailored to your needs, whether you want to gain relief from chronic pain, facilitate injury recovery, improve flexibility, reduce stress, improve well-being, manage depression and anxiety or find relief while struggling with cancer, heart disease, MS, arthritis or other medical conditions. Yoga therapy targets the practice to specific disease condition. Most disease conditions benefit from some yoga asanas or yoga breathing techniques and not others. A yoga therapy program for back pain, for example, would be very different from a yoga therapy practice targeting depression. Yoga therapy adjusts the poses to your body's needs. You will be guided how to modify and adjust poses to your body's specific needs using props, modifications, and alignment assists. Yoga therapy uses adjunct techniques to speed your progress. When called for, I may use deep tissue massage and fascia release work while you are in the pose to release tight muscle groups and facilitate a deeper core awakening. Yoga therapy deepens body awareness. You will be guided in the fine subtleties of muscle relaxation, stretching, and strengthening. This increases body awareness and helps you make more rapid progress in reshaping/retraining your body. Yoga is about taking little steps consistently and patiently to deepen your relationship with your body, to invite greater health and vitality into mind and body, and to achieve greater balance of mind and spirit. It is exactly in this way, step by step, exploration after exploration, that yoga spontaneously creates its therapeutic effects. As long-term practitioners of yoga can attest, yoga is therapy because it not only enhances the health of our body but also augments our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Yoga is therapy because, ultimately, true healing must involve not just our body but our mind, our emotions and even our spiritual life. Yoga therapy affects a gentle mind-body repatterning, which enables us to let go of habits that no longer serve us and embrace lasting change and growth. Tammy is an excellent yoga instructor who made me feel very comfortable even though I had no previous yoga experience and was somewhat out of shape. She is very knowledgeable of the yoga poses and teaches in a way that builds confidence and promotes total peacefulness and relaxation. She is very patient and soft spoken, which further enhanced my yoga experience.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I suffered deeply from depression and a host of physical medical issues. I was disabled by them. I had the opportunity to meet with a yoga therapist and after 2 sessions it transformed me in ways that nothing else had. I enrolled in a 200 hour yoga certification course and began the journey of healing myself.
