Angie has taught me how to handle my dog, and in return, my dog is a much better behaved pet. She really listened to my concerns and made a plan to work on each one of them. I highly recommend Angels in the Infield! Professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable about training dogs (and their people).

Fetch Pet Sitting looked after my Bulldog and 2 Kitty Cats while we took a 14 day vacation over the Christmas and New Year Holiday Season. I typically take my dog to a kennel however he is getting up there in years I and would have worried while away. Fetch set up an initial meeting in my home where the 2 sitters came and met my animals and got all the information they needed to take good care of my animals. I provided them with a key each, and on the day of my departure received a text message letting me know they would be there later on that day and to have a great vacation. During my vacation, I received a text from home giving me a quick update on the status. Which allowed me to really relax. Upon my return I found the animals content and happy. The house was left very tidy, the mail had been taken care of, and most of all my pets were all in great shape. In fact - I think they were a little disappointed when we walked through the door rather than the pet sitters - they were completely spoiled while I was away. I fully intend on using Fetch Pet Sitting again and would highly recommend this service to anyone who has pets. They were professional and very thorough, and they obviously have a deep affection for animals as demonstrated by how my pets were upon arrival home. I had the service come to my house 3 times a day - since I was gone for so long. I think the service was good value for money - I would have paid as much to Kennel my Dogs and pay a neighbors kid to look after my cats. Peace of mind - Priceless.

Carrie is GREAT! She is clearly a pet lover (as is her partner). She makes an effort to be flexible to one's schedule. She does not just sit and watch the dog play outside, but is actively involved. If you need her to find palace off-leash, she will find it. She will come to your home and she will do overnights. Her home is rather small to have a large pet there but it is full of love and comfort, which is most important. She will check in w/ you everyday, give you updates; never complains (even if your dog helps her to sprain her ankle!) She is trustworthy and I highly recommend her!

When our dog reached 7 years of age, we used Tracy to stop by, to walk and let our dog out for bathroom breaks, while we were working. Tracy is very caring, trustworthy and reliable. Tracy would stop by when we were home, and our dog would be excited to see her! I wouldn't hesitate to utilize Tracy's services again.

This trainer has a very confident manner and my dog reacted well to him. I am learning a lot about dog behavior and how to read my dog's body language. He has given me great information and tips covering many different areas of my dog's reactions. I would recommend him highly to anyone serious about doing the work to strengthen their bond with their furry friend. Enjoyable too

Jess took great care with my two dogs and cat while we were on vacation. I knew from the moment I met her that the animals would quickly adapt to her caring for them. They instantly fell in love with her wonderful personality and passion for animals. Dependable, caring, and affordable. Highly recommend.

Melissa is an amazing trainer! She has been helping me train my dog, Boone, in nose work and without her help we wouldn't have made any progress as her hands on lessons made night and day difference. I can see a huge difference in my dogs confidence and in his ability to follow commands. Definitely would recommend V Force training for anyone looking to have fun and excel with creating a better bond with their dog!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
