Fast response, knowledgeable. Good HVAC check up and recommendations about my cooling maintenance. I would like to see him use shoe 'booties' next time, meaning I will call upon him again. Very nice guy.

3rd party HVAC company came out for service. SBPH does not actually provide the service. I was quoted $79 for a diagnostic. After 1.5 hours, problem not solved but bad control board suspected. I was charged $150. Turns out $79 is for first 30 minutes only. I was not informed of this. I was supposed to get a call about a quote for board which never came. All in all I had to call Oliver Heating and cooling. More expensive, but upfront, and fixed problem two days later.

Set the bar for service level. We are so happy we found Marion and his crew to help us with our HVAC cleaning. So courteous it was confusing. He called to explain his estimate. He answered all of our questions. Then called day before appointment to confirm. Then called on way to my home. Then took shoes off when arrived. Then explained what they were going to do. Did it. Then cleaned up. Then charged us what he said he would charge. And the work was fantastic. Very good people. Thank you!!!

I have used EP210 for various properties in Philadelphia from installing a gas heating furnace to improving the heat in specific rooms. There is no problem that escapes these guys. They always find the problem. What is most impressive is their honesty and integrity. Sometimes an issue can be solved by routine maintenance. They just take care of it and charge me the small fee for the maintenance. There have been times where I expected to pay several hundred dollars and ended up paying a fraction. Rey and his crew always finds the problem and charges appropriately. I never get a surprise high bill like I use to get in the past from other HVAC companies. I would send EP210 to my grandmother's house and she doesn't know English. Good gas heating specialists are hard to come by. This is one of the best.

I would 100% recommend Benny and Sub Zero HVAC to anyone looking for these services. He showed up on time and was extremely thorough in my heating system tune-up. He opened everything up, double and triple checked all sensors and even checked for gas leaks and carbon monoxide levels. Too often in this business people take advantage since the typical homeowner doesn't know better. This was not at all the case with Benny. He walked me through everything he was doing and took his time with it to ensure it was all in great working order. I have already planned follow up work for Benny to do in the spring with my air conditioning system. Thanks again, I am glad to have made this connection with a contractor I can trust.

Greg did an excellent job with our ducts and gave us a very fair price in doing so. I would recommend him to anyone in the market for a duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, or any HVAC cleaning/maintenance. I will definitely be keeping his number handy for future vent and dryer cleanings. Thanks, Greg!

Adams HVAC was the fifth contact I made to get an estimate. I had gone on the web to get information about a central air system in my house. In doing my homework I came across Johnathan and he was totally professional when he came to my house to give me the initial estimate. Johnathan was totally on time, punctual when the work was started during the same week. The quality of the work supports the value of the money spent. He even came back the next week to check and see if the unit was operating properly and cleaned up some of the wires that he determined need to be encased. Would use this company for future projects. FABULOUS!!!!!

Integrity residential has done several jobs for me over the course of 2 years, including helping with rehab of rental properties, and installing heating systems. Tyquan is very knowledgeable regarding the most efficient and economical way to get the most out of heating/AC and other repairs. He is timely and responsive, while being very competitive in terms of cost. He stands by his work and knows the city codes inside out. I would highly recommend him for both residential HVAC and property maintenance.

Rarely do I write reviews, but this one is more than well deserved and I wouldn’t be doing the public any favors if I didn’t. You ever get really anxious and flustered when you know you need to call someone for some work to your home, mainly because you either don’t trust the work they are going to do, they can’t make it in the time you need it done or you know they’re going to way overcharge? This is absolutely not the case with Matt and I’ll never use another HVAC provider. My tenant came home from work and the house was 80 degrees on a super humid day and the AC wasn’t working. I called Matt and he was at the house within 15mins. He had the problem diagnosed and fixed quickly, keeping me informed on what the issues were constantly. Then, even though this was an emergency call, his quote for the work was more than reasonable and he even said he would go back in a few days and check on things. He also outlines possible causes for the issues, outlined what can be done to prevent going forward and even offered to look at some other issues facing the tenant. Honest. Integrity. Reliability. Three traits that accurately describe Matt and his work. Do yourself and favor and use this guy, you’ll be happy you did.

I recently needed to have a new steam boiler installed. I used the Thumbtack website and was given a list of companies to get estimates from. I had 4 representatives come to give quotes. I was most impressed with Energy-Star Services approach to pricing. No nonsense: two models offered for my heating needs. The quote was very reasonable with great financing, and the HVAC manager, Josh, explained all of the technicalities in very understandable terms. He immediately inspired confidence in me. When my old boiler had started to fail, it was already beginning to get cold outside. Josh understood the urgency of scheduling and was able to put my job on his schedule for the exact day that I wanted, a few days after our meeting. He gave me a very reasonable quote for a third-party to take out my old large furnace which I wanted to get rid of. On the day of the installation, four men with three trucks arrived and set to work. They basically completed the job in two days and did beautiful work. The installers,Rob and Josh, were very hard workers and good problem solvers. Getting the new boiler into my old basement was a huge task. It actually involved having to take the new boiler partially apart. There was absolutely no complaining or balking about this setback. Whenever I was concerned, I would call Manager Josh and he would always put me at my ease and explain what was going on. He was extraordinarily responsive, always answering the call immediately. Where can one find customer service like that these days? After all was said and done the men cleaned up the basement up beautifully! I would recommend Energy-Star services to anyone. You will be in good hands. What a great company!! Margaret Hager Sent from my iPhone

I use Deiter Brothers at my personal property, rental properties and my business because they have proven to be there when I need them. Over the past 20 years I have needed their service two separate times on Christmas Eve and both times they were there for my tenants. Within a very short amount of time they showed up, diagnosed the problem and had the heat turned back on for my tenants! The technician was not "snooty" for being bothered on a holiday - he was about teamwork and was only interested in getting the heat back up and running. I use Deiter Brothers for all of my HVAC needs and I highly recommend them to you too!

Scott is professional, friendly and knowledgable about his work. He fixed my AC on a holiday weekend, and followed up by committing to find the missing part I need to keep the system running. He and his son were wonderful to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
