Alex Lee is a very talented illustrator and a delight to work with. He created a wonderful cover for my middle grade/young adult book, on time and on budget, and was always willing to make changes based on feedback from the publisher. I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Derrick provided a thorough review of my book. His service will make it a better product. I am happy that he was available here on thumbtack. This was my first book so I was not sure what to expect and I probably don't know the proper jargon yet to provide a better response here but suffice it to say I felt Derrick provided me prompt, sincere, detailed, and professional service to me. Thank you, Derrick!

Vince and his team created three VidBis for our company including an overview of our firm, who we serve, and our process. Vince took the time to gather all information from me regarding what we wanted in our videos and samples of how we wanted them. He incorporated all of the things we requested for our videos plus added his own professional touch. He allowed for me to review and change anything I wanted before he published the final product which was all done in a timely manner. We were more than pleased with all three videos and receive compliments all the time! I would recommend Creative Visual Productions to anyone looking for fresh, professional videos for their business. The whole process was a very pleasant experience!

Leslie demonstrated excellent teaching skills, being softer at times and pushing more when needed. Moreover she shown a lot of flexibility to adapt to him and his scheduled when needed and always got the work done. Leslie has been above and beyond expectations!

Over the last 2.5 years, David Gertler has helped me edit a book I am writing about chess. As a philosophy professor, I have had 12 books published in the last decade (mostly new editions of textbooks), and so I have extensive experience with editors, proofreaders, compositors, and so on. Mr. Gertler's work has been exemplary -- helpful, insightful, and prompt. He has done research for me, improved my prose, and noticed apostrophes that were backwards. He has marked up around 35 different chapters (sometimes multiple drafts), totaling several hundred single-spaced pages. I have agreed with upwards of 90% of his suggestions, which might be a record in my experience. He is one of the very best.

I first met Lorna after reading her incredible poetry. I was mesmerized by her power of word usage. I was so captivated by her creative style that I had to read all that she had published. Over the years, she has been a very valuable resource because of her incredible ability to direct and cultivate my own writing talents. Recently, she has entered the children’s marketplace. This expanded her value to use and consult with, as her professional approach has been quite enlightening while adding great richness to my writings. I look forward to using her unique talents in all my future writing.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

          • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
          • Strong writing skills.
          • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
          • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
          • Expertise in your target area.
          • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

          • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
          • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
          • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
          • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
