The National Dog Show Presented by Purina hosts a special Gala every year on the night before the show as a fundraiser for a variety of charities including Ronald McDonald House, Philadoptables, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society and Canine Partners for Life.
The semi-formal event, attended by more than 250 people, is co-hosted by Hall of Fame sports broadcaster Mary Carillo and is attended by luminaries including John O’Hurley of Seinfeld fame and NBC Philadelphia anchor Keith Jones plus NBC executives and legions of dog lovers.
So, it’s a bit of a tough room and with entertainment pros everywhere, expectations are high and the right comedian has to know his or her audience.
Erik did the work and we got the credit. Saw Erik at a comedy club in Philadelphia the previous spring, laughed out loud all night and believed we had what we needed to get the job done. No one gets judged more harshly than a standup comic and the people who did the hiring.
Erik knew intuitively that wiseguy comments about dogs being dumb would not be well-received. And, if my recollection is correct, he was one of only three African Americans in the grand ballroom. Those dynamics were putty in the hands of Erik, who entertained the key executives at his dinner table through the evening and then killed it on stage.
His self-deprecating humor was especially appreciated thanks to his ability to work in jokes about dogs and dog-owners with style and recognition of which lines not to cross. His professionalism and ability to personalize his performance were exceptional.
Unfortunately, the Gala has been on the sidelines because of COVID-19, but when we get it back on the schedule, we look forward to having Erik perform again.
