Introduction: Hey my name is Andrew, and I have been teaching and performing for over 10 years! I am currently offering both virtual music lessons and in-person lessons in/around the Philadelphia area. I would love to hop on a phone call with you to talk about your musical goals and how we can get there! See below for a blurb on my professional and musical journey. My love of music and songwriting started in middle school, and has taken me across continents in my quest to spread the joy of learning and creating music. After years of piano and trombone lessons in elementary school, I fell in love with the guitar and studied both jazz guitar and orchestral trombone throughout high school. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Wesleyan University before taking a teaching opportunity to devise and teach a songwriting class to high schoolers entitled “In My Own Voice” in South Africa! Upon returning to the states, I joined the K-8th grade Alexandria Country Day School in Virginia and led their chorus program as well as the band ensemble and the junior high symphonic orchestra. I pride myself on giving my students agency in choosing their material and guiding their learning to allow them creative control. These days, I am the front man for my band, FeelFree, which recently won best reggae album at Washington DC’s Wammy Awards and performs about 70 shows a year. I have three albums out on all digital streaming services like Spotify/Apple Music with over 10k active monthly listeners. When I’m not songwriting, teaching or performing, I enjoy cooking and challenging others to funny-face competitions. I am currently offering piano, guitar, trombone, and songwriting/composition lessons.

Andrew has been teaching our teen for 1 year, mixture of virtual and in person lectures. She has made a significant progress after starting guitar lessons with Andrew, without having any prior experience with guitar and now plays several of her favorite songs. She has fun during her lessons and is motivated to play guitar without us having to remind her. Andrew is very easy to communicate with, responds quickly and is accommodating should there be a need to change a lesson last minute. He also has excellent work ethic - always on time and works with us to make sure lessons are given in an environment we are comfortable with given current state of pandemic.

I’ve been taking lessons from Andrew for about 8 months and he is an absolutely fantastic teacher. As an adult he has been extremely communicative directing my lessons in a way that just mikes me want to keep learning. He also teaches several of my grandkids. With each of them he is kind and patient while nudging them forward in their piano journeys. It’s fun for them to show me what they’ve learned. Andrew is simply a gifted teacher for all ages.

Andrew has been providing piano instruction via zoom to my 8 year old for over 18 months now and it has been incredible to see my child’s growth musically. Andrew meets his student where they are by tailoring his instruction to their interests. That’s why I’ve referred him to several other friends and family members ranging from ages 6 to 86!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

The quoted price you see on Thumbtack is per lesson, but I offer discounted packages if purchasing a month of lessons or three months of lessons!

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

My process begins with establishing an open avenue of communication with all my students! That ensures that I can gauge their musical interests, their past musical experiences, what their musical goals are, and what type of music they hope to be creating/playing!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Music from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, I studied under renowned jazz musicians Jay Hoggard and Anthony Braxton there. Upon graduating, I was hired as a musician-in-resident at a prestigious South African boarding school Lebone II - College of the Royal Bafokeng where I taught students a songwriting and creative writing course entitled "In My Voice". Upon completing my residency in South Africa, I returned to the Washington DC area to tour with my band FeelFree. When not touring, I was the symphonic and jazz band leader at a K-8th grade school in Alexandria, Virginia called Alexandria Country Day School where I taught brass, woodwind, piano, and string instruments to 4-8th graders and lead the K-3rd grade choir. I have extensive experience teaching students of all ages guitar, piano, and brass instruments.
