I purchased an old Philadelphia row house earlier this year and was excited but overwhelmed with where to start. I had a lot of ideas but was nervous about investing money in painting and updating the house without some outside help. That's where Johanna came in. She read and promptly replied to many very long, sometimes contradictory emails from me until we refined what my vision for the house was (mid century modern / craftsmen / Art Deco). I felt like she really understood what I was going for and I loved all her suggestions, and I'm pretty picky 😜. I hired her for a paint consult and for adhoc decorating advice. I never thought I would hire someone to choose paint colors but it was SO helpful. All of the colors in the house flow together nicely. During the consultation we started with my Pinterest boards and she was able to suggest a few colors at a time and help me narrow down the best options, taking into consideration the adjacent rooms and the light in the space. It was a fun process and the best part has been absolutely loving the colors as they're painted on the walls. Additionally, she crafted beautiful decorative trim designs for 2 of my rooms. The contractors immediately commented on how well-done and comprehensive the designs were. She was very responsive for real time questions as the trim was being installed. Johanna helped me create some BIG MOODS in my house. Lastly, she suggested curtains and lighting throughout the house which have been game changers, especially in the kitchen - turning it from a pretty outdated space, to a room I really love with minimal work. Can't recommend her enough! Money well spent. Looking forward to continue working with her in the future.

I was disappointed that she did not help with the areas I had concerns with which was taking our ideas and finalizing them to get our room deaignShe put together some nice designs but since we had a good idea of how we wanted things she left us on our own to finish the project and that is where I needed help. I wanted someone to help me put the room together and it is still unfinished. I have a home that is a blank canvas and it could have been a lot of extra work for her but I guess we will be doing it on our own.

Details: Design of 1 - 2 rooms • Office space • Living room • 500 - 1,000 sq ft • Furniture selection • Lighting selection • Color palette / paint selection • Space planning / layout • Window treatments selection • Accessories / art selection • Craftsman / Farmhouse • My home, venue, etc.

Johanna is super sweet and easy to work with. She listens to your needs and style and is thoughtful in her project proposal giving you options to work with. Together we came up with the desired look and she knocked it out of the park with the room renderings and furnishings. She gave me the motivation to design the bedroom of my dreams with the hotel look I wanted. I’m happy to say that it came out almost exactly as we had envisioned and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. I highly recommend working with Johanna!

My husband and I hired Johanna to help in designing a master suite (bedroom, bathroom, walk in closet) from an existing space of two bedrooms in our 3 story row home. This included plans for pulling up plumbing lines from our already established second story bathroom. The completely blank slate was overwhelming to say the least. I had the general idea but with Johanna’s help, she made the vision come alive. My husband and I always say she was the best money we ever spent for this project because she gave us the confidence to believe it could be done. We were able to see a rendering of the finished project. Along the way she completely respects budget, and is excellent at getting an understanding of your style and putting things together in a beautiful way. She carefully laid out every detail for the contractor to follow. And followed up with us throughout the project and months after.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

For Design-Only & Full Service projects I work at a rate of $150/hour. A typical room takes anywhere from 20 to 35 hours to design, sometimes more if it is a large renovation or large open concept. At the end of the design, my clients walk away with everything they need to put the design plan into action on their own: a retail furniture source list with hand selected pieces to order, or the drawings necessary for contractors to begin construction. For clients with a minimum budget of $30K, I offer Full Service Procurement & Project Management. With this service I order furnishings from my trusted trade vendors providing you with high quality, unique and custom furnishings for a one of a kind look.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have my Bachelors of Science and Masters of Architecture from The Catholic University of America. I am a licensed Architect in both PA & DC and always prioritize learning more about sustainable goods, products & materials when it comes to continuing education. I have 10 years of experience working on a mix of high-end restaurant/retail interiors, multi-family apartments, & adaptive re-use projects. My diverse background of project types has given me a unique perspective allowing me to balance the details with the big picture design.
