Tanya and her team are the best! She is so easy to work with, affordable, and overly accommodating. Tanya did my trial hair and makeup for my bridal shower at my house, went into her salon when she had to work her other job to fix my traumatic purple hair 10 days before our wedding (long story!), and brought her team to do the bridal party's hair and makeup to the hotel on our wedding day. She stuck to our timeline, and everyone looked fabulous! I loved working with Tanya and talking with her the morning of our big day kept me smiling and my nerves at ease. Thank you Tanya for going above and beyond! As an added bonus, her husband even cut my groom's hair before our wedding. He had never been to a real barber before and it looked awesome!

I really cant thank Lilly and Joanne enough for their patience throughout this whole process. I really enjoyed the privacy of doing our makeup and hair for my wedding in her home versus a salon and Lilly helped me find a look that was just perfect. It took a few trials to figure it out, but she was so helpful and patient as we tried different things. I plan on coming back to Lilly the next time I need an artist and even hope to take some lessons with her to help me learn how to better use my day to day makeup at home. Thank you so much Lilly!

I hired Emily with Love n Glow to do the wedding makeup for my bridesmaids and I and I am so glad that I did! I had my makeup trial with Emily the morning of my bridal shower so she made me look beautiful for that event and I got endless compliments on my makeup. She even traveled to my apartment to do the trial which made that hectic day a little easier! I had an early morning wedding so we started doing hair and makeup at 5am and Emily was there ready to go when we needed her. Worrying about if and when vendors will get there on the day of the wedding is not something you want to deal with and even having met Emily only once before, I knew she was reliable and had total trust in her being there on time even with such an early call time. One of the big warnings I got with wedding makeup is that some makeup artists apply makeup so heavily that you don't look like yourself. Emily chose such beautiful shades for our makeup and had such a nice balance so that my bridesmaids and I looked AMAZING, especially in the photos, but so natural that you don't look and say, wow, they have a ton of makeup on. A lot of the girls in the party, myself included, don't wear a lot of makeup on an everyday basis and she was still able to pull off this professional look of natural beauty. My mom owns a beauty salon so I can be very picky when it comes to my hair and makeup, but I wouldn't have wanted anyone else doing my makeup on my wedding day. I am so happy I found Emily and hope I have an excuse to have her do my makeup again in the future. :)

Kelsey = hair goddess! I've been to the best salons in both NY and Philly and Kelsey is even better ! I was born a natural blonde and as I got older, it got darker. Kelsey is able to make my hair look continually natural blonde without root touch-ups every month which means a lot to me and my wallet. My highlights always look natural as well. As a concierge physician, I always need to look up to par and Kelsey keeps me totally presentable even while chasing around my two kids.

No one compares to Kristen! She is so charismatic and could not be more personable. On top of doing a great styling job, she has such an energy about her that makes the time spent with her so much fun. She is very flexible when I run into a schedule conflict and is easy to reschedule with, and nothing compares to not having to go into a salon to get your hair done. She comes to you!! Love her!!

I completed 8 wedding hair trials across DC, MD and VA. After a 6 month search, I landed on Zoe Sky for my wedding and I honestly could not be more pleased with her work. She single-handedly completed different looks for 8 bridesmaids , 1 mother, 3 flower girls and myself in less than 5 hours. Everyone was absolutely gorgeous and very pleased with their styles! In fact, several of the girls (including me) have started attending her salon in Philadelphia. Zoe was flexible, affordable, willing to travel and a consummate professional. She was one of the best vendor choices I made and my special day just wouldnt have been the same without her. HIRE ZOE!!!

The shop was nice, staff friendly. In addition to getting my makeup done Diane asked if I would like anything done to my hair for my special occasion. I had a blow dry and style in addition to the makeup. I am very satisfied with the service and would go again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a facial?

A facial is a restorative cosmetic treatment for the skin on your face. Facials can be performed by a licensed cosmetician, esthetician, dermatologist or other qualified provider. Spas,  medi-spas and other skin care centers offer facials. Most offer different types of facials that address the most pressing skin care needs such aging, dryness, sagging, pigmentation, etc.

The national average cost for a facial is $60-$80. More complex facials, such as microdermabrasion or chemical peel, will cost more, as will services provided by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The products used can also affect the cost of your facial; high-end creams and serums will likely result in a higher cost. For most non-medical facials, the practitioner will perform a skin assessment, determining your skin type and learning about your lifestyle, diet and skin care concerns. Then the facialist will cleanse and exfoliate the skin, extract any blackheads and clear clogged pores, give a facial massage, apply a treatment mask and then apply moisturizers. Typically facials are relaxing and restorative, leaving your skin clear and dewy.

    Which facial is best?

The wide variety of names, methods, techniques and technologies for facials can be confusing. The best facial for you depends on your skin care needs. If you’re aging and want to address wrinkles and sun spots, you may want a chemical peel, while for acne you may want a deep pore cleansing treatment. Consulting with a licensed esthetician, cosmetologist or dermatologist will help guide your choice. Skin care professionals specialize in assessing your skin and determining which course of treatment will help you achieve your goals. Here is a basic overview of the best facials for different outcomes:

    • Reduce wrinkles: A chemical peel can help stimulate skin cell turnover, creating a fresh new layer thanks to the salicylic or glycolic acids. It’s important to work with an experienced professional when getting a chemical peel so you choose the right level for your skin type.
    • Prevent acne: Enzyme facials or LED facials help battle acne breakouts.
    • Smooth skin tone: Microdermabrasion facials are done using a small tool that polishes off your dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of skin underneath.
    • Relax and rejuvenate: A traditional European facial often features warm steamed towels, a facial massage, deep skin cleansing and exfoliation, extractions (as desired), face masks, and applications of serums and moisturizers to leave your skin refreshed and you feeling great.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.
