FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I trained as a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, and I have worked in research and development. I have had many experiences in which I have worked with a group of technicians and engineers to figure out how we can design and build a useful prototype on a very meager budget. I have seen how individuals in a group bring different understandings to a problem. This experience has been very valuable for me as a teacher because it underscores the fact that sometimes there is more than one way to solve a problem - and more than one way to explain a concept.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I homeschooled my sons, I had many friends whose children attended local schools. They would often ask me to help their child with their math and science homework or school assignments. I soon had friends of those friends calling to ask if I would tutor their children. As the mother who always hosted play dates with a house full of children, other parents knew that their children felt comfortable with me. I realized that I had a gift for building a rapport with students and for helping them to develop the confidence to ask question.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
I began to homeschool my son, who is now a college freshman, when he was in third grade. I enjoy young children and I have on occasion tutored elementary students, but I primarily work with students who are middle school, high school or college level. I have had students from our local public, parochial and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. I have students who are taking AP Calculus and Chemistry and who plan to major in math or science in college. I have students who struggle with math or chemistry. For those students I reinforce basic concepts and help them to regain their confidence.
