Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Electricians incorrectly reassembled the gang boxes, leaving loose wires that made the circuit not work, and were probably, in fact, dangerous. Forcing me to redo the entire job myself.

I didn’t hire Mr. Sparky but the electrician who came on site was quite good. Cost to replace one outdoor sconce and a 2nd lights night sensor was too rich for my budget.

Brian came to our place downtown to quote a job that included a few elements: hanging a chandelier, moving a thermostat, and checking a faulty outlet. We absolutely would have hired him if the electrician in our family didn't find out we were looking for help and insisted on doing it himself. Brian was prompt, professional, and worked around our schedule. I will look forward to an opportunity to hire him in the future.

Michael was the best electrician I have had the opportunity to employ. He was responsive, professional, ethical, honest, and provided outstanding work quality. He is someone you can depend on to do the job correctly. He removed old knob and tube wiring, ran all new wiring, installed a ceiling fan and light in our bathroom, new outlets, and switches. You won't find anyone any better and reasonable. Highly recommend.

Tayvon was very friendly and professional. Yes, he is young but he knows what he's doing and his prices are very reasonable. When he couldn't quite figure out a wiring issue in our primary bedroom, he came back the next business day with his brother who is also an electrician and remedied the work that was previously done. He also replaced a corroded junction box and mounted a new ceiling fan in our family room. Will definitely hire again.

If I could select all 5 categories I would but Thumbtack would only let me select 3. Tireal is a very professional, hardworking electrician that doesn’t stop until the work is done. We even had a separate subcontractor on our bathroom that messed up Tireal’s electrical work and he had no issue with coming out, confirming our suspicions and getting the outlet back to how it was wired before. We will definitely be hiring Tireal and his team again. Very polite, punctual, professional and amazing work done at a great value!

David was prompt, courteous, and professional. In addition to completing the project at the quoted price, he also helped us problem-solve regarding a specific problem we had regarding outlet safety in our nursery. He also completed an additional project that we had inquired about. He told us he was unable to complete a different project that requires a certified electrician, and I appreciated his honesty. The work he completed for us is quality work and we will not hesitate to contact him for future projects. We would happily hire him again!

Brian called back within five minutes, set up an arrival time and arrived on time. He took the time to review my problem (Low voltage and blinking lights. He checked my service line and service box and determined them to be clean, dry and in good working order. We went outside and took a closer look at the incoming power lines (The older three (3) separate conductors) and determined there were splices between the pole and my service line. He believes the problem is with Duquesne Light and should be upgraded to the newer triplex line to solve the problem. Brian is knowledgable, professional and will be my electrician for all my future projects. Thank you Thumbtack....Joe Campisi Pittsburgh, PA

John is a really wonderful electrician. I requested a bid on a Wednesday and he was able to come out that afternoon and look at the work I needed done. He installed a ceiling fan that I had purchased in a bedroom, replaced the broken window mounted attic fan and installed a new temperature control, and put in a new bathroom fan where there was no existing fixture. He was prompt both when he gave the estimate and when he arrived to do the work. I was on a tight schedule because I was having plumbing work done too and he was able to fit me in. He was also very neat and cleaned up and vacuumed all of dust and dirt from cutting a hole in my ceiling. I will definitely hire him again. He even took some time when he was finished to look at some other issues and talk about potential solutions. His price was fair, accurate, and he delivered the estimate and invoice via email.
